Poisoning by lavender is uncommon. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the LD50 values for lavender taken orally and applied topically were determined. In mice, the oral LD50 was 13.5 ± 0.9 g/kg, where central nervous system depression occurred 10 to 15 minutes following ingestion and death occurred 1 to 3 days later.47,48 Similar results were observed in rats.47 For dermal applications, the LD50 was greater than 5 g/kg, with no systemic symptoms or deaths in rabbits observed up to 14 days.48 In humans, an 18-month-old boy ingested homemade lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) extract. Three hours following the ingestion, the child developed confusion and deep drowsiness, with adaptive motor response to painful stimuli indicative of moderate brain injury (Glasgow Coma Score = 9). His neurologic status normalized within 6 hours of hospitalization, and a follow-up electroencephalogram was normal at 24 hours. Comparative toxicology analysis between the boy's blood, urine, and pure lavandin extract showed linalyl acetate, linalyl formate, and acetone were detected in all samples. Acetone, which was a confounding factor for coma in the poisoning, was found to be slightly higher than normal in healthy adults and was concluded not to be the cause of the central nervous system depression.49
You might think peppermint oil is an excellent breath freshener, but it certainly does a lot more than that! Peppermint oil contains menthol, a natural anesthetic that gives an amazing, cooling sensation (think of the refreshing taste of peppermint gum). An important point to note is that peppermint oil is a lot more concentrated than most essential oils so it is best used when diluted with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil or sweet almond oil.
Essential Oils are known to have a direct effect on the parts of the brain that control anxiety, stress, depression, and fear. In fact, according to a study conducted by Taiwanese PhD researcher, Kai-Jen Chuang, exposure to essential oil for an hour relaxes a person as it decreases the heart rate and blood pressure. In other words, it acts as a stress reliever because of its interaction with the body through absorption of the skin and/or one’s olfactory system. Once the essential oil is in the body, it gives a signal to the limbic system of the brain and tells it to relax.

Used in a diffuser, cinnamon essential oil also helps to fight inflammatory symptoms, just like frankincense oil. It is also said to help people fight symptoms of depression.1 Not only that, but it is a festive scent for the holiday season, and you can add other oils to the mix to get an even better scent. For instance, adding clove oil is commonly done!
I love essential oils! I use NOW Oils because they are affordable and easy to find. I think Young Living and DoTerra are over priced marketing scams. I tell everyone I use NOW. I have great success using the more reasonable priced oils and they even make some of their own blends. Highly recommend but everyone needs to find what brand works for them.
It’s important to note: sandalwood has also been shown to increase wakefulness and alertness, even when it is also triggering physical relaxation. Everyone reacts to scents differently. Sandalwood may deliver sleep benefits for some people, while for others, it may promote wakeful, attentive relaxation. If that’s the case for you, sandalwood isn’t right for nighttime, but you can use it during the day to feel relaxed and alert.
Not to be confused with the more exotic Holy Basil described above, regular Basil, which millions worldwide enjoy as a spice and salad green, also acts as a powerful anxiety-reducing herb in essential oil form. According to a meta-study of all research done on essential oils at Hainan Medical University, Basil was found to be one of the most powerful essential oils for reducing anxiety and stress out of the hundreds of oils surveyed.
