One of the best parts about shopping on Amazon is the insane selection, and searching for "essential oils" on the mega-site will return more than 100,000 results. But that also means a wide range in quality, especially because the way in which essential oils are made greatly affects their potency and purity. If your goal is to buy essential oil on Amazon without sacrificing quality, keep scrolling for expert tips and product recommendations that are worth your money.
While I’m all about individual empowerment and autonomy, let’s consider this in a different light. Would we accept this model for any other type of medical/pharmaceutical sales? If I wanted to start a multi-level marketing company selling antibiotics for children and then allow anyone to sign up, sell and distribute to anyone that wanted my products, would that be okay? Beyond okay, would it be celebrated the same way that essential oils are? No, it wouldn’t. Most people would say that distributors selling antibiotics without any training, education, or regulation would be irresponsible. Yet, essential oils claim to be natural antibiotics all the time. It’s a double-standard.
To get essential oils, flowering plant parts or peels must go through a distillation process. Naturally, some plants yield lots of oil easily, and others have more labor-intensive processes, yielding lower amounts of essential oil. For example, damascene rose is one of the most notorious labor-intensive essential oils to distill, which is reflected in its high price tag. It takes approximately 2,500 pounds of rose flowers to produce 1 pound of essential oil. Rose is a delicate flower and distillers have a short 30-day window to harvest the crop, which cannot be done during peak hours of the sun's heat. That being said, pure rose damascene oil often sells for more than $2,000 per pound. Rose is perhaps the most extreme example, but other essential oils, like many citruses, are distilled via cold-pressed expression and can be found in usable quantities for $15 or less. Knowing about specific plants can help you identify fair market prices and spot red flags.
On the bright side, dōTERRA sources their essential oils from growers across the globe who use a distillation process of low-heat steam distillation or cold extraction for select essential oils. Their global botanical network encompasses farmers and distillers in 40 different countries. dōTERRA offers full insight into the consumer journey from essential oil sourcing to delivering the bottle to a consumers’ hand, on their website Source to You. GC/MS quality reports are also available for download on this website.
When using any herbal product, including essential oils for anxiety and otherwise, it’s extremely important to only use wildcrafted/wild-harvested or organic products that are grown without chemicals, herbicides and pesticides and distilled without the use of solvents and chemicals.  Wildcrafted means it is grown wildly in nature, just as it would in its native habitat, without any synthetic inputs from man whatsoever. Hence, so long as it is grown in a wild area away from cities, it is virtually as clean as it can get. Organic is similar in that no synthetic chemicals and pesticides may be used in the growing and extracting of the oil, which makes them of similarly high quality. Biodynamic is even one step better but can be hard to find.

There have been many human clinical studies testing the effects of essential oils on healthy subjects.(15) The potential health benefits of essential oils are vast. Many essential oils have antioxidant properties.(16) The results of six studies examining the effects of aromatherapy on depression showed positive effects.(17) Other studies also suggest that essential oils, such as tea tree, lavender, cinnamon, basil or rosemary, may resist microbes and inhibit the growth of strains of E. coli – another promising area of research.(18)

Because of this extreme level of concentration, essential oils contain extraordinarily high levels of medicinal compounds—far more than the amount found in the raw plant materials used in herbal supplements for anxiety and stress. That means that each drop of essential oils that are good for anxiety and stress contain, on average, the equivalent medicinal benefit of many pounds of raw herbal materials—far more than you could ever take in one day in any practical way. As such, they are able to deliver very potent medicinal effects that have been shown in many studies to have borderline miraculous abilities for lowering anxiety and stress.
Never use an undiluted essential oil on a baby or child. Children have much thinner, more delicate skin than adults have, and tend to be very sensitive to the potency of essential oils. In fact, even if you do use essential oil in a recipe for children, only use half of the essential oil recommended in the recipe. That’s all they’ll need, anyway. (Here is a list of 19 essential oils that are safe for babies and children.)
Mountain Rose – This company was my very first experience buying outside of the grocery store. This was mainly because I did my research to find them and they offered both high quality essential oils, but also at great prices and in small sizes. Not only is it not much out of pocket, but I don’t have to buy a huge bottle of something I may not use all that often.
