Essential oils are extremely volatile meaning they evaporate and diffuse into the air quite easily, allowing you to simply breathe them in and still achieve a fairly strong medicinal effect. This would look like opening the top of the bottle of the essential oil, holding it under your nose and taking a deep inhalation. You can also put a few drops of the essential oil into your palms, rub them together, and then hold them over your face while taking a few deep breaths. Plus, I don’t care how wonderful an EO is, I don’t think a certain combo is going to make someone “Thankful” or give them “Couraqe.” Those are personality traits, not a response to treatment. Since the recent rise of the multi-level-marketing essential oil companies, and other brands claiming that their oils are pure enough to eat, the idea of freely ingesting essential oils has plagued the minds of the average consumer.
How do you know which are the best essential oil brands? After all, this is an industry that isn’t regulated by the FDA. Oil quality can vary based on the distillation process. It also matters if the manufacturer dilutes the pure plant oil with bases or additives. But many of the most popular companies do rigorous testing to prove their oils’ purity.
Another well-researched essential oils benefit is their role in aiding and improving digestion. Some oils help to relieve upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach spasms and even conditions of the gastrointestinal system, like IBS. Essential oils can also aid your digestion by helping to stimulate digestive enzymes that make it easier to break down and absorb the nutrients, fats and protein that you need.

Only sampling every crop, every batch would support that claim. Anyway, I am not a qualified aromatherapist either but my research suggests that YL oils and their advice might be best to avoid.

Hi. I have been using DoTERRA’s products for approx. 6 months in many ways, topically, diffuser, cleaning, cooking, etc. I recently had surgery and got a bad cold while in the hospital. I started using doTERRA’s OnGuard throat drops and continually got worse (I also suffer from asthma so was using my inhalers as well.). Do you think there is any way the drops killed too much of the good bacteria in my mouth and throat? Just wondering your thoughts on this. Looking forward to your feedback.
I’m curious why you didn’t just get your protein shake powders from YL, if you only wanted one auto-ship order? Seed to Seal is more than a trademarked “CPTG” label. And you have so much more variety in oils and Thieves cleaner, shampoo etc. As you know, we own or coop all of our farms and distill ourselves. We perform 20 tests in triplicate. And we do 1st distillation only – so they contain all the hydrophilic molecules from the plant. Do you know if the Essence line uses 1st distill or complete distill? If they’re fractionated they won’t contain all of the molecules – would have probably lost some sesquiterpenes and smell sweeter. I’ve been to 2 of the European farms and the process is nothing short of amazing. Blending is an art and not so simple as mixing the same oils together to duplicate a blend by another company. It doesn’ t bother me that other companies are getting in on the essential oil bandwagon. More natural solutions – less pharmaceuticals. That’s a good thing! But, I wish someone else would be original for a change. It bothers me that all the companies try to duplicate YL blends. Only the “real thing” gets copied. No one copies a counterfeit. For the record, Valor doesn’t contain Valerian. It’s not a “sleep” blend. It’s for grounding and confidence. Perhaps you are thinking of RutaVaLa. Consider flip-flopping your decision and get your morning protein powder shake from YL. 😉

I had a mild infestation from a bed frame I got from someone, and I kept a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol by the bed. I sprayed all the parts of the bed before bringing it in the house, but somehow missed some. I would spray the wood liberally every night before bed, down in the crevices, as much as I could, and also spray them directly whenever I would see one. They were gone in a matter of days.
Poisoning by lavender is uncommon. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the LD50 values for lavender taken orally and applied topically were determined. In mice, the oral LD50 was 13.5 ± 0.9 g/kg, where central nervous system depression occurred 10 to 15 minutes following ingestion and death occurred 1 to 3 days later.47,48 Similar results were observed in rats.47 For dermal applications, the LD50 was greater than 5 g/kg, with no systemic symptoms or deaths in rabbits observed up to 14 days.48 In humans, an 18-month-old boy ingested homemade lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) extract. Three hours following the ingestion, the child developed confusion and deep drowsiness, with adaptive motor response to painful stimuli indicative of moderate brain injury (Glasgow Coma Score = 9). His neurologic status normalized within 6 hours of hospitalization, and a follow-up electroencephalogram was normal at 24 hours. Comparative toxicology analysis between the boy's blood, urine, and pure lavandin extract showed linalyl acetate, linalyl formate, and acetone were detected in all samples. Acetone, which was a confounding factor for coma in the poisoning, was found to be slightly higher than normal in healthy adults and was concluded not to be the cause of the central nervous system depression.49
I love that there are only 10 oils. I am really into essential oils but it can be very overwhelming and confusing when there are literally hundreds of different oils to choose between with different brands. I like to diffuse, apply topically, and occasionally add oils to my water or recipes so I like that these oils are high quality and rigorously tested. I can trust that they’ll perform.

A randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled crossover trial31 in 17 healthy human volunteers investigated brain changes detectable by positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scanning after administering 8 weeks of SLO at 160 mg/d. The investigators focused on the inhibitory 5HT1A receptor because of increases in activity of this receptor being highlighted in the pathophysiology of anxiety in previous neuroimaging studies.32 They found reduced binding potential at the 5HT1A receptor in the hippocampus and the anterior cingulate cortex in the SLO group compared with placebo, which has also been demonstrated after administration of escitalopram or electroconvulsive therapy in patients with anxiety.31,33 The authors postulate that reductions in 5HT1A receptor activity may be a commonality in the anxiolytic efficacy of various interventions, and that SLO also acts via this mechanism.


I know nothing about using EOs so I am trying to do some research. I live in Missouri and there is a company here called Jordan Essentials all of their products are all natural. They recently came out with an essential oil line. My friend is a consultant for them and I am considering but some. Although I trust her, I don’t know what information the she has been told to say without really knowing what the quality is of their EO is (if that makes sense lol)If anyone know anything about their EOs please let me know 🙂

As far as uses to avoid when pregnant, use a reputable resource. No essential oils have been scientifically proved to be harmful to a developing fetus. Aromatherapy: Through the practice of aromatherapy, essential oils are diluted in water and released into the air using a diffuser. Breathing in essential oil molecules may stimulate parts of your brain that influence physical, emotional, and mental health. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, for example, some scientists believe that inhaling lavender essential oil may affect brain cells in a similar manner to some mild sedatives, while other researchers believe these molecules may interact with hormones or enzymes in the blood.(6)
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts. This particular company was one of the ones tested that did not mislead and did not have "filler" chemicals so that's why I personally made my purchase.

There are a few oils that are good for pain. Clove, Peppermint, wintergreen, would be the main ones. You can layer them by putting on on at a time. If you do that make sure you test an area of skin first to make sure you are not sensative to any of them. Use Pepermint as the last oil since peppermint can be used to push the other oils deeper. Copaiba will also work with the other oils and make them more potent.
I just want to add a note here on behalf of those companies like NOW and Aura Cacia and all the others from the health food store I’ve tried. They may have all good intentions. They may or may not be testing their oils, anyone can give a test. The mass spectrometry test will pass with a very high amounts of filler oils and chemicals from extraction in it. These issues may not necessarily be from the owners of companies that get oils out there, it may be from the farmers selling the oils and trying to get an extra buck or from somewhere else in the line of business people it goes through before it gets to our shelves. Our world is very focused on money so who knows where the fault really falls. If you’re wondering what brand you should use, I would recommend the three above… doTerra, TRUessence, Young Living… however, I think its better for people to decide for themselves, so maybe do your own smell test. I’ve also been told that if an oil says “not for internal consumption” then there’s a pretty high chance that it is not as pure as it should be to be safe (at least if its is on the FDA’s GRAS list). I know this is long, but hey you asked right? And anyhow, education brings true freedom.

There is a HUGE difference in quality in essential oils. It is a mistake in this article to say they all ‘come from the same place’ as stated above and indicate they are pretty much the same. In fact, they are not. A company called YOUNG LIVING (based in Utah) produces all of their own oils…they even have their own distilleries in Ecuador and other countries and they are a SEED TO SOIL company; Meaning nothing they obtain ever comes from nor is handled by a second hand source. They do ALL from planting the seeds to harvesting and distilling and bottling the product. The oils from YOUNG LIVING ARE SAFE FOR INTERNAL USE. This may not be true of other oils but of YOUNG LIVING specifically you can take these oils internally. I HAVE ALSO USED THEM ON ALL MY CHILDREN SAFELY INCLUDING MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE WAS UNDER 6 MONTHS SAFELY. I have used these oils internally for more than a year and am finally healing after 7 years of chronic health care that traditional medicine left unresolved. I hope people reading into this who are seeking real healing from a quality and safe essential oil company will explore the safety and health benefits YOUNG LIVING has to offer. Their oils have changed my life.


Somebody asked about the relationship between doTERRA and Young Living, since their claims regarding their respective oils are so similar. Funny thing about that. There was originally only one company – I think Young Living, although I am not sure – but those folks got in a squabble among themselves and a group broke off and formed doTERRA. Hence, the nearly identical hype.

Be careful when buying essential oils from companies that primarily sell to the food & beverage or perfumery industries. Some vendors that primarily sell to these industries may have different goals in the purchase and sale of their essential oils than the goals of vendors that sell oils specifically for therapeutic aromatherapy use. The restaurant and perfumery industries desire essential oils that have a standardized (consistent) aroma or flavor. The oils sold by these sources may be redistilled to remove or add specific constituents (natural chemicals found in the oils). These re-distillations or adulterations are generally not as beneficial. However, it can be tempting to shop with such vendors as their prices can be cheaper. If desiring to buy from such a vendor, inquire first to ask about their methods.


RC and Raven (YL Blends) are a few that I have used for myself and family for breathing issues. And Digize (also a Young Living Blend) is excellent for digestion, acid, and upset. Peppermint and Fennel are also options to look into. As far as best brand, you will have to do your research. I have been very happy with Young Living, but I know many will find the “best” from various sources to make up their essential oil cabinet. You will not want to use a vaporizer for your oils, I would suggest purchasing a diffuser which is designed to disperse your oils, over time essential oils will breakdown plastic tubing. A search on Amazon or Abundanthealth.com is a place to start looking at diffusers. You can also get a free one in premium kits sold by Young Living. Please feel free to contact me.
When you regularly practice deep breathing, it becomes second nature to you, so I recommend scheduling breathing pauses throughout your day. Start by practicing a 10-second ritual at the top of each hour to train your body to utilize the diaphragm. Most people suck in a deep breath by pulling their shoulders up; they assume it just means inflating the lungs. But beneficial deep breathing focuses on the diaphragm, which is located in the abdomen. When you inhale, your abdomen should blow up like a balloon. Exhaling involves sucking in your abdomen to push the air back out. Allow the rhythm of your breaths to complement a slow count of 10 in your head, with a steady stream of air flowing in through your nostrils, billowing into the deep recesses of your lungs, pausing gently in the middle for five seconds to find a center of peace and balance, and then gently leaking the air out, passing through your mouth and over your lips.

These oils I mostly reach for during cold and flu season and in the winter. Anything with eucalyptus and peppermint really invigorates the senses and clears the sinuses. To answer your question I am going to make a suggestion – buy an oil from the grocery or drug store that your daughter in law has in stock from YL, arrange a time to go over to her home and smell the 2 bottles. As silly as it sounds you will be able to tell a difference just in the smell. And yes, you get what you pay for. Many grocery and drug store brands are 2nd, 3rd, even 5th and 6th distillations of the product, are often diluted with carrier, and are not as pure as YL or DoTerra. Both of those companies use the 1st distillation which is the most pure. As for carrier oils you can use coconut, grape seed, sweet almond, jojoba, olive, or even boring old vegetable oil.

Clary Sage is a popular option to help support the common problems associated with menstrual cycles in women. This oil can be diluted at a 2-4% ratio with other carrier oils or diffused into the air. The natural scent of Clary Sage has traces of fruit, flowers, and nuts. The comforting fragrance helps keep the mind and body steady and stabilized when emotions can be overwhelming.
Apply to the body directly. Some people find it soothing to apply essential oils to pressure points, like the wrists or behind the ears, or use oils to give themselves a light self-massage. (Massage for–or from–your bed partners work great, too!) Essential oils in undiluted form are highly concentrated and intense, and can irritate your skin. DO NOT APPLY undiluted essential oil to your skin. If you’re planning to use essential oils topically on your body, be sure you’re buying an already diluted oil—a mixture of the fragrant essential oil of your choice and a carrier oil (often a vegetable oil).
The world of essential oils is vast, intriguing, and honestly, a tad confusing. Are these plant extracts actually that powerful? (Yes.) Do I need to be the DIY-loving, crunchy type to use and enjoy them? (Not at all!) Can I just dab a few drops on my skin and call it a day? There are certain essential oils that should not be taken internally (this can be researched on Mountain Rose Herb website from this article as they list the ones that are beneficial for internal use i.e.: digestive), but some of the common EO’s may be taken internally when mixed with something (i.e.: baked goods, water, etc.). I have personally used lemon and peppermint for this and I really like it. The standard I’ve seen is a drop per 8 ounces although I prefer about half that because I tend to use it in a larger container and drink it through out the day…if you don’t drink it all right away, the flavor seems to increase a bit over time). Be sure to mix/shake it well before drinking.
Are they an eco-conscious company? One of the reasons I choose the essential oil (and herb) company that I use for my personal and business needs, is because of their sustainable practices. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.[23] Essential oils should not be interpreted to be cures for chronic disease, or other illnesses, as scientific research does not support this.[24] Much of the research on the use of essential oils for health purposes has serious methodological errors. In a systemic review of 201 published studies on essential oils as alternative medicines, only 10 were found to be of acceptable methodological quality, and even these 10 were still weak in reference to scientific standards.[25] Use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation; there has been at least one case of death.[26] As such, the use of essential oils as an alternative medicine should be approached with caution.
Frankincense Carteri Organic essential oil has been used as a spiritual incense, in beauty products, and for medicinal purposes in both folk and traditional Chinese cultures. Frankincense helps promote the healing of bruises, swelling, sores, and pain. This oil can also be added to creams and lotions to support healthy skin and reduce the look of maturing or weathering. Frankincense can also be an aid in times of sadness or grief.
Lavender calms the nervous system by lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature – all processes which take place during the body’s natural transition to sleep. Lavender essential oil alleviates mild insomnia and reduces anxious thoughts by literally changing your brain waves to a more relaxing state. One study focused on ICU patients found it to significantly reduce their anxiety and increase sleep quality. Lavender aromatherapy is so effective at calming anxiety that it’s recommended as a complementary therapy to other treatment options for anxiety and depression in postpartum women.
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, essential oils are highly concentrated and contain active ingredients. For instance, it takes 220 lbs of lavender flowers to make 1 lb of lavender essential oil. Depending on their use, most essential oils should be diluted first before use. Diluting essential oils helps spread the aromatic, concentrated molecules over a larger area, making it easier and more comfortable for the body to absorb.
