The more of the particles you inhale—and the closer they are to your nose—the stronger the effect of the essential oil. Gillerman recommends putting a bit on your fingertips and dabbing it on your temples and the spot between your eyebrows at the top of the bridge of your nose. "That's a very potent point for calming the nervous system," she says. Slowly breathe in and out for five to six breaths. "You can also put a drop on the palm of each hand, and then cup your hands to your face and breathe in," she says. "This is nice because you can hold your hands as close or as far away from your face as you want."

Substitutions: In a face serum, balm, or cream, try other essential oils heavy in monoterpene alcohols, like lavender and rose geranium; or sesquiterpene alcohols, like German chamomile, sandalwood, and patchouli; and ketones, like rosemary ct. verbenone and manuka. Additionally, based on your skin type, other carrier oils may be suitable. For acne or oily skin, try grapeseed or hemp oil, and for normal or combination skin, try using apricot kernel or jojoba.
When we inhale the aroma of an essential oil, it immediately kicks our body into action as its molecules travel through the olfactory system into our brain. From there, it can directly affect the many bodily reactions and systems, including emotions, memory, blood pressure and heart rate, breathing, hormones, and stress. One simple whiff of a concentrated essential oil can almost instantaneously trigger our bodies into action, causing the production of feel-good neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
Thyme is often used to treat respiratory problems. Thyme essential oil can help central sleep apnea, which is caused by a miscommunication between the brain and respiratory system. Thyme essential oil helps keep the respiratory system strong and healthy, and is often used as a natural treatment for the cold. Like lavender, it also has antibacterial properties.
I have friends who have had great results using Young Living oils for anxiety and insomnia. I agree with you, too, something from nature rather than something from the lab is going to be actually healing rather than masking symptoms– I ONLY use Young Living. When I have anxiety, I often use a beautiful blend called Joy. It sort of depends on where the anxiety comes from though, so I use a variety of oils depending on what’s going on. Sandalwood is great for old fear and terror coming up– better out than in! For insomnia, lavender on the pillow, on the feet, diffussed; RutaVela is a blend of rue, valerian and lavender and is great great great. Peace and Calming, Stress Away… So many wonderful options. I am happy to help, contact me or use my Young Living #1112524.
Great article! I like the way everything is explained in detail. I love essential oils and use few kinds for aromatherapy, but the thing I always wanted to do is to include essential oils in my homemade cleaning solutions. In your article I found all the information and advices I needed, so now I already can use essential oils for cleaning too. Thank you for the hints!
There is a lot of misinformation on the web, in books and by word of mouth, about the use of essential oils. No matter the brand that you choose to go with, using essential oils safely is the most important factor. ALL essential oils (no matter their brand) can be dangerous if not used with caution and care. To learn more about how to SAFELY use essential oils you can read my latest post: Introduction to Essential Oil Safety
Available trials support the short-term efficacy of the standardized lavender oil extract SLO in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including subsyndromal anxiety disorder (anxiety not otherwise specified), GAD, restlessness and agitation with disturbed sleep, and Mixed Anxiety and Depressive Disorder. Many treatment guidelines in anxiety disorders predate the publication of most of the randomized controlled trials featured in the Table. The British Association for Psychopharmacology (2014) and National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (2011) guidelines for GAD acknowledge evidence for SLO based on the single trial they examined54; however, sufficient data to make a definitive recommendation for use were not available at that time.7,56
In fact, one of the most ancient methods of cleansing the body is also still one of the best! Essential oils have been in use for literally thousands of years. UTNE describes how history shows evidence of essential oils use for both physical and spiritual cleansing as far back as 1500 B.C.E.! Practitioners of Ayurvedic healing, Chinese medicine and holistic healers have been quietly continuing to use simple, natural essential oils to accomplish whole body cleansing.
I just came across Organic Infusions and am curious as to how you like them. I haven’t seen that you’ve come back to this post and would love to hear some review on this company. I will go ahead and place an order for a couple things, (geranium and lavender) and see how they compare to Aura Casia that I’ve used for years. I also like Oshadhi, but it’s not a direct company. I have to agree on the doTerra and YL issue, very sketchy indeed and I’ve stayed away from them, more because I don’t feel that the people selling the product are trained enough. We shouldn’t be ingesting EO’s, that’s not what they’re for. I hope one of you will come back and review this company. Thank you =)
Estrogenic and antiandrogenic activity have been reported by in vitro study of tea tree oil and lavender essential oils. Two published sets of case reports suggest the lavender oil may be implicated in some cases of gynecomastia, an abnormal breast tissue growth in prepubescent boys. The European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety dismissed the claims against tea tree oil as implausible, but did not comment on lavender oil. In 2018, a BBC report on a study stated that tea tree and lavender oils contain eight substances that when tested in tissue culture experiments, increasing the level of estrogen and decreasing the level of testosterone. Some of the substances are found in "at least 65 other essential oils". The study did not include animal or human testing.
Although SLO is standardized to 80 mg, a similar dose size can be calculated readily using a nonstandardized LEO. The density of lavender oil has been estimated to be around 0.88 g/mL at 20°C.28 Therefore, 0.1 mL of oil would be weigh approximately 88 to 89 mg. Assuming 20 drops per milliliter, this would equate to around 2 drops of LEO for a dose of 88 mg, although variability is to be expected given the imprecise nature of this calculation, and it may be more accurate to measure a volume or directly weigh the oil.
The bitter orange tree actually yields three different essential oils: oil that comes from the fruit; petitgrain, which comes from the leaf; and neroli, which comes from the flower. "These are all fantastic essential oils for anxiety, especially when it comes to sleep," says Gillerman. One study performed by researchers from Mei University in Japan found that people who inhaled orange fragrance were able to reduce the antidepressants they took, and the orange oil returned their endocrine and immune systems to normal levels. Another study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior found that people who smelled orange (or lavender) oil while waiting for a dental procedure were significantly less anxious than those who listened to calming music or those who had no stimulation at all. And who doesn't get some anxiety when going to the dentist? (Related: 10 Essential Oils You've Never Heard Of and How to Use Them)
When one drop of Essence by Isagenix Essential Oil is blended into your IsaLean Shake, it mixes with all the other oils and ingredients in the shake to decrease its concentration. Drinking an Isagenix shake out of your plastic shaker cup or blender bottle should not be a cause for concern. When adding one drop of Essence by Isagenix Essential Oil to water, it should always be mixed in a glass or stainless steel bottle or container.
I did a price comparison from various oil companies, including doTerra and Mountain Rose Herbs. The price differences seem to focus primarily on country of origin, followed by whether they were fair trade. doTerra, for example, sells Frankincense from Oman, and the wholesale price for 15ml is almost $70. Mountain Rose sells USA Frankincense at $20 for 15ml. Eden Botanical sells Frankincense from Somalia at $16 for 15ml. Scents of Earth sells Frankincense from Oman at $45 for 10 ml (or $67.50 for 15 ml).
Studies have shown that essential oils effectively destroy several fungal, viral and bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori and Candida albicans infections. Because antibiotic resistance is becoming such a major threat in modern health care, using essential oils as a form of independent or combination therapy can help to fight bacterial infections in a safer and more natural way. Furthermore, what's interesting is that essential oils can be both calming and stimulating. The same oil can have a different "effect" depending on what is required of it. So a restless person may find that they feel calm after using a particular oil, while another individual who is feeling low and depressed may get an uplifting and invigorating effect using the same oil. This is why some essential oils are referred to as "adaptogens" because they can literally "adapt" to the needs of the person using the oil.

The use of essential oils for medicinal purposes has an ancient history, going back to early Egyptian, Chinese, and Roman societies. Ever hear of the Hippocratic Oath? That’s the ethical pledge taken by physicians for centuries (now, often taken by students upon graduation from medical school). It’s named for Greek physician, Hippocrates, who studied the effects of essential oils and was a proponent of their healing, health-promoting properties.
Hi there! I know in your list of 21 facts you said these oils should not be ingested…I have heard otherwise about a few specific brands. What were your true thoughts on this? Do you or have you used any oils internally? Or anyoneelse on here maybe? Really wanting to heal from the inside as well as using these topically. Thanks in advance! I’m still pretty new at this so any input or advice would be great!
Orange essential oil smells just like, you guessed it, a fresh, tart, orange. With a powerful, uplifting aroma, orange oil has proven benefits for creating feelings of happiness that can improve energy levels. A study conducted at Mei University in Japan documented that when administered orange oil, patients were radically able to reduce the amount of antidepressant medications they were on.
