Although, there is a method to extract essential oil into a carrier oil. It’s called “infusion”. Herbs are placed in a jar, and the jar is filled with just enough oil to cover the herbs. After at least 2 weeks, the herbs are strained out and you’re left with an infused oil! Sometimes, fresh herbs are placed into the infused oil to make it extra-strong. Infusion produces a very mild oil, though, and there’s no need to dilute it.
Some oils can be applied directly to the skin, this is called using the oil “neat”. That does not mean to say that you shouldn’t dilute the oil in certain cases. Always dilute when applying to children and always check instructions from the company on how to apply the oil. Some need to be diluted to prevent skin irritation like peppermint. Those oils are considered “hot” and the irritation they cause is unpleasant to say the least. Research the oil before using and allow your body time to respond to each new oil before introducing a new one. Your body will tell you if you need more or less dilution with each oil If you give it enough time to respond.
I went through hell with one of my teen kids! Your story breaks my heart! Everyone said to me, “it will get better”, and I had a hard time believing it! It really does get better with time and guidance. I also have an elderly widowed mom, and she will likely not be driving much longer. I am her only family. So, I understand your stress! Feel free to email me if you need to chat or vent. I was very much alone with my struggles with my teen, and, it’s a very lonely place to be! Wishing you the best!
There have been many human clinical studies testing the effects of essential oils on healthy subjects.(15) The potential health benefits of essential oils are vast. Many essential oils have antioxidant properties.(16) The results of six studies examining the effects of aromatherapy on depression showed positive effects.(17) Other studies also suggest that essential oils, such as tea tree, lavender, cinnamon, basil or rosemary, may resist microbes and inhibit the growth of strains of E. coli – another promising area of research.(18)
Bergamot Organic Essential Oil is popular for its fruity and floral fragrance. This oil has versatile benefits, from easing stress to promoting a healthy mental state during times of grief and sadness. Bergamot can also help clear skin problems and tackle oily skin through gentle cleansing. Finally, add this oil to a muscle massage to help relieve aches or muscle tension caused from fatigue and exercise. The Plant Therapy Bergamot Organic Essential Oil does not contain bergaptine and is safe to use in the sun.
However, Dalton notes that what works for one individual might not work for another. “Aromatherapy is effective, but in my experience there are no prescriptions that work for everyone,” says Dalton. “It's far better to find what works for you.” That's another way of saying there's a huge psychosomatic aspect to essential oil usage, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The Ananda Apothecary operates business hours of Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm MST. You can call 1-303-440-3766 for Customer Service or contact custserv@anandaapothecary.com. This brand also offers a newsletter, social media channels, and a neat “Aroma Science” section where you can learn a whole bunch of detailed essential oil information from their staff chemist (who is also their most active writer).

Winslow’s Soothing Syrup was a favorite infant remedy for colic and teething. Its contents? Morphine and alcohol. Infant death from accidental overdose was not uncommon. Did that halt its popularity? No. In 1868, one of the owners reported that 1.5 million bottles were sold annually. While the American Medical Association incriminated this drug in 1911 in a section of a publication called “Baby Killers,” it remained in production until 1930 still being sold to unsuspecting parents.
I agree with Leili. Not that there aren’t other essential oils out there that are pure, but after researching other companies, I only use YL. Only. The level of quality and consistency of the oils is unsurpassed, they have set the world standards for quality and purity. They are the leading producer of Therapeutic Grade oils in the world. Never any fillers added, never anything synthetic. I use them topically and internally on myself and my children with amazing results. IMHO, you can’t go wrong there. I am a YL distributer if you want more info, contact me. 🙂

When I first got into essential oils, I started out using Young Living. I was really interested in their Seed to Seal promise and many of the purity promises they have within their brand. My interest was piqued when I recently found out that Isagenix started selling the Essence line of essential oils. I already order my morning shakes through this brand and typically order my essential oils through Young Living. So when I discovered that the COO from Young Living works for Isagenix now, I knew the oils would be high quality.
I see a lot of comments on here that advise unsafe practices on ingesting essential oils and using them undiluted. Essential oils should never be ingested unless under the care of a doctor or naturopath. In France, only a doctor can prescribe injestion and in Britain they don’t advise it at all. There are many cases of individuals being harmed by this practice. Essential oils are highly concentrated and do not need to be ingested in order to be effective. Also, essential oils should not be used on children, or anyone else, undiluted. Peppermint oil, in particular, has been shown to slow breathing in infants and shouldn’t be used on or diffused around them. I suggest that anyone using essential oils educate themselves on their effectiveness and dangers. There are many great resources, including Dr. Tisserand’s book “Essential Oil Safety”. Education should go beyond that of what a particular company tells you or trains you to do.

Depending on the plant and oil in question, it takes fairly large—sometimes huge—amounts of raw plant material to make tiny quantities of essential oils.  For example, to make just one half ounce of lavender essential oil it takes 27 square feet of lavender plants. To make the same amount of lemon essential oil it takes 75 lemons and to make the same amount of rose essential oil takes 22 pounds of rose petals. On average essential oils are approximately 75-100 times more concentrated than dried herbs.
Linalyl Acetate is an ester that is found in the trio of essential oils included in this anxiety blend. Linalyl acetate can be helpful in situations of stress, anxiety and depression. Bergamot is a citrus with a beautifully distinctive citrus aroma that contains Linalyl Acetate and smells delightful when combined with clary sage and lavender essential oils.
The fresh, citrus aroma of Lemon essential oil is a recognizable and refreshing scent, that rejuvenates and energizes your body. Straight out of Italy, Lemon essential oil has been around for hundreds of years. This oil is extracted through the peel of the lemon, creating a 100% pure oil with no additives or extra ingredients. Not only does lemon smell amazing, but it can also help promote a strong immune system, strengthen the body, and is the perfect addition to DIY household cleaners or sprays.
With a sweet scent and a hint of balsamic, juniper berry essential oil is most frequently used to cleanse the renal (urinary) system, fight infection, and improve skin health. “In traditional medicine, this oil was used for its antibacterial properties,” says Nada Milosavljevic, MD, board-certified, Harvard-trained physician and founder of Sage Tonic. “Those prone to urinary tract infections may find that it acts as a natural cleansing and detoxifying agent and supports healthy kidney and urinary function.” In fact, one study by the Institute of Chemistry, Tallinn University of Technology, found that juniper berry oil contains over 87 different active compounds, including antioxidants, antibacterials, and antifungals. Although it’s not discussed as often, juniper berry may offer emotional support as well. “Several traditional healing cultures have used it as a calming agent to help with cases of burnout, stress, and anxiety,” Milosavljevic says.
If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome as a browser there is an app/add-on called “adblocker plus”. Download and install it. When you see floating icons like that and they bother you, right-click over them and scroll down to “block element” or “use adblock” and click OK/Submit/Add. This will remove the floating script/image and allow for better viewing.
“Aromatherapy grade” and “fragrance grade” means it not 100 percent pure essential oil, but has had other oils added, such as carrier oils and/or synthetic components of the natural oil. “To be considered a therapeutic oil, it must be completely free of any and all chemicals as well as slowly and carefully extracted via methods that keep the original compounds in its natural state,” says Dr. Axe. These healing scents will help you feel better.
Here are a few of the top-rated essential oil products on Amazon that may help relieve anxiety. If you’re thinking about giving them a try, be sure to loop in any other medical or mental-health professionals you’re currently seeing; they may be able to provide additional guidance or alert you to any potential side effects or interactions for which you could be at risk.
This post is a definite BOOKMARK for me…I love all the info. My favorite essential oil to put in my burner is sweet orange – it just makes me so HAPPY! I read your response above about YLEO. I received a package of them as a gift a few years ago from a friend. I love them and have them in my studio all the time, but honestly I would never pay those prices. MLM completely scares me off of them too…just sharing my agreement with you 🙂
Young Living – They can be pricey, but at the same time they do have a great quality oil and they have been around for many years. I personally like some of their non-oil purchases because there is a great selection. It’s cheaper if you sign up for a kit (and you can either send in a letter “resigning” as a distributor or let your account go inactive if you just want to buy a starter kit and get some of their oils at the discount for being a member. Or you can buy the individual oils… even better is to find a friend to buy individual oils from if you are not and/or do not want to sign up for them. If you’re interested in buying Young Living, my friend Dayna at Lemon Lime Adventures sells them.
Bath: Avoid dripping your essential oil directly into the bath water; you always want to mix it first with a natural emulsifier like honey, milk, a carrier oil, or even sea salt. Doing this will help emulsify and disperse the essential oils into the water. If you don’t do this, the oils will simply sit on the surface of the water and come into direct contact with your skin, possibly causing burns and dermal toxicity.
Every bottle of Plant Therapy oil has a batch code on the bottle. You can use it to look up the GC/MS report, which lists all the chemical components of a particular batch. "If you see something like GC/MS, that's important to know," says Lutzi. "That means that it's a higher quality oil because they did spectrometry on it to identify the levels of actual active oil constituents." Add these fall-themed blends to your cart if you love the smell of PSLs. ($25; amazon.com)
The Ananda Apothecary may be a slightly lesser-known name and strangely hard to pronounce. However, it’s a company of true essential oils people where you can buy almost any type and variety of essential oil you can imagine. Most importantly, they offer wild crafted essential oils, which are oils made from wild harvested plant materials and not plants grown on farms. You can also purchase organic oils certified by both the USDA and Ecocert ICO, and specially AGED essential oils. If all of these things are new to you, find more details in my full brand review here.
A peaceful, calming scent, chamomile benefits inner harmony and decreases irritability, overthinking, anxiety and worry. An explorative study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine on the antidepressant activity in chamomile found that this essential oil “may provide clinically meaningful antidepressant activity that occurs in addition to its previously observed anxiolytic activity.” (11)
Try keeping some essential oils handy, and use them whenever you find yourself feeling tired. Keep a bottle in the car, office, or gym bag. Alternatively, take energy-boosting essential oil blends anywhere you go with portable aromatherapy diffusers. Whichever method of using these essential oils you choose, all you have to do is take a deep breath and tackle the day.
The selection here is very straightforward. Some of the most basic oils that do everything are lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, frankincense, tea tree, and peppermint. I’ve used almost every oil single so far. I’m also super impressed with the blends. My favorite blends from Young Living and Doterra are Breathe (DT), Thieves (YL), RC (YL), Digize (YL), and Breathe Again (YL). I am super impressed that I can dupe basically all of those within the Isagenix line.

Resins and complex combinations of terpenes are released by some plants and trees, such as evergreens, to act as antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial agents against a wide range of organisms that may threaten the survival of the plants. Compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones found in plants such as feverfew, yarrow, and blessed thistle, have been found to play a strong antimicrobial role as well as a protective role from herbivores.

An amazing essential oil that is commonly used in skincare is rose, and this is because of its ability to help people with dry, damaged, or aging skin. It’s considered to be so effective because of the many therapeutic compounds that are contained within the formulation; helping to improve skin complexion, as well as treating dermatitis and other skin conditions.

There are at least 30 + single plant essential oils that can be applied neat ( straight or undiluted) a far cry from a few. Most of the rest only need approx 1 to 1 dilution. Again the same goes for undiluted oils for babies and children. Now naturally their skin is more sensitive so you need to be more watchful and careful and possibly only place these oils on a babies feet and use a 1/4 to 1/2 drop of the oil instead of the full dose.

Words like "natural" and "organic" get tossed around constantly in regards to beauty, food, and health products — but the truth is that these words don't mean much of anything right now. In America, there is no certified definition of the word "natural" when used on branding labels and ingredient lists, so companies can make these claims as often as they want with little repercussions.
When one drop of Essence by Isagenix Essential Oil is blended into your IsaLean Shake, it mixes with all the other oils and ingredients in the shake to decrease its concentration. Drinking an Isagenix shake out of your plastic shaker cup or blender bottle should not be a cause for concern. When adding one drop of Essence by Isagenix Essential Oil to water, it should always be mixed in a glass or stainless steel bottle or container.
Almost all essential oils are suitable for use on non-sensitive areas of your skin. Essential oils are absorbed through your skin and directly into the bloodstream, making this an effective and medicinally active route for administration. A good spot to use essentials oils to treat anxiety and stress is at the base of the skull where it meets the top of the neck. This is near the brainstem, which mediates all nervous system input and output throughout the body, and can oftentimes be immediately calming to the nervous system, which is majorly implicated in anxiety and stress levels. Other popular places for application of essential oils is the crown of the head, wrists, upper arms, and bottoms of the feet. Theoretically you can apply them anywhere within the realm of common sense (avoid the eyes, ears, noses and genitals, obviously), although some of them can be quite strong and so it’s important to use caution when applying them near the above mentioned sensitive areas. A good rule of thumb, is to test out the oil on a small area of non-sensitive skin to ensure you don’t have any sensitivities or adverse reactions.
Aromatherapy for anxiety is very popular because our sense of smell triggers powerful emotional responses. We process so much information through our sense of smell — in particular, in an area of the brain adjacent to the limbic region, according to “Freedom from Anxiety: A Holistic Approach to Emotional Well-Being” by Marcey Shapiro and Barbara Vivino. (14) This is the area of emotional processing and memory recall.
I know there is a stigma of MLM and that people get heated over which company is the best or they complain about practices. Here’s the deal, they still have great products regardless of how you feel about ingestion or non-ingestion. I used Young Living for many years as I have had friends, family, my midwife use them and share them with me. At one point I even signed up for them too to get a discounted kit because I liked the product so much. But I also have used DoTerra from friends and purchased their product as well. Our house is, and has been, full of various brands for years and that’s the way we love it!
Do you love cinnamon rolls? Cinnamon as a spice can be used in so many ways, and cinnamon oil has many health benefits. Used in a diffuser, cinnamon essential oil also helps to fight inflammatory symptoms, just like frankincense oil. It is also said to help people fight symptoms of depression.1 Not only that, but it is a festive scent for the holiday season, and you can add other oils to the mix to get an even better scent. For instance, adding clove oil is commonly done!

There are many ways you can use essential oils for their calming, relaxing, and sedating effect. You can make an essential oil blend using a carrier oil and massage the stress-relief essential oil on your temples. You could also add a combination of anti-anxiety oils to your diffuser. Or, you could ease your tension away by relaxing in a warm bath that has a few drops of essential oils added.
Thank you for this wonderful information! I have been inundated with the numerous brands of essential oils on the market. I have read reviews, but by far your information has helped me the most. I have been using oils for my Chronic pain & Neurosarcoidosis, always worried if the oils we’re harvested safely. This information will now allow me to make better decisions on my therapeutic treatment in the future! Thank you for your lengthy research!

The beauty of essential oils is that they are natural, extracted from flowers, leaves, bark or roots of plants. While it’s best to make sure you use pure essential oils, meaning oils that have not been diluted with chemicals or additives, they can provide much needed relief and healing for a variety of ailments, including as a natural remedy for anxiety.
Now Foods – great price, OK essential oils for cleaning house and scenting your room. You can find these at your local Whole Foods or Central Market or for the best price, on Amazon. They even have a few organic ones as well. I only use this brand for my cleaning needs because I don't like using my precious Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils on something like cleaning. You also have to pay close attention to their labels as they do sell oils that are already diluted with a carrier oil and their Jasmine oil is cut with fragrance oil to save them money, but they DO label it. (Jasmine is very expensive on its own. Don't buy their Jasmine oil because fragrance oils are what you are trying to avoid.) You can read more about NOW Foods on their FAQ page.
Topical application allows the essential oils to permeate the dermis and directly enter the bloodstream, where it can be directed toward the area of the body that needs its healing power. Combining essential oils with a carrier oil is always a safe idea, and it allows for a greater surface area of application, so be sure to use a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil with your essential oil massage. One of the most effective trios of essential oils for massage include lavender, bergamot, and frankincense. Mix one drop each of the three essential oils in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and apply with long, smooth strokes to the body. Throw in your deep breathing for the ultimate aromatherapeutic stress relief.
Essential oils aren’t created with carrier oils – they’re extracted using a variety of methods. The most common are cold-pressing and steam distillation. Most citrus oils are cold-pressed (the name is pretty self-explanatory: they’re pressed), but almost all other essential oils are steam-distilled: the plant matter is placed above steaming hot water, the steam takes essential oil from the plant, and travels through a condenser. After condensing, you’re left with water and a tiiiiiny bit of essential oil floating on top.
Weight-loss results may vary. A 2008 university study showed a statistically significant weight loss of 7 pounds during the first 9 days of the Cleansing and Fat Burning System. It is very important to note that not all essential oils are safe to take internally. When in doubt, do not ingest it to be on the safe side. However, those that are will give a strong medicinal effect when taken internally. With that being said there are definitely some very strict precautions you must adhere to when taking essential oils internally since they are so strong. These are very important and not to be ignored.
Unfortunately, the scene has been set for unethical business practices as large corporate players drive raw material prices to low levels, often forbidding profit to be made. With rampant adulteration of oils (e.g., cheaper essential oils substituted and falsely labeled—like lavendin for lavender, or a completely synthetic laboratory-made oil labeled as wild-harvested), it’s crucial to be in the know about realistic essential oil prices—particularly for unadulterated, pure, and rare oils. For example, rose, jasmine, and sandalwood being sold in ½-ounce and 1-ounce sizes should raise some eyebrows. A single ounce of rose otto retails for $400 or more!
Plants store essential oils either in external secretory structures, which are found on the surface of the plant, or internal secretory structures, which are found inside the plant material. Usually with plants that have external secretory structures, you just have to lightly touch them and you will notice an aroma imparted to your skin. With plants that have internal secretory structures, you may need to break the leaf or seed in order to get to the aroma/essential oil.
One thing I wonder though (couldn’t find it on the websites you listed either) – My grandmother loves the smell of tomato leaves and I ran across a hand cream that was tomato leaf scented once when I was overseas but it was too much liquid to bring home. Is there somewhere I can find an essential oil or make one or something like it to make a nice handcream for her?
Ylang Ylang has a romantic, flora aroma that consists of several components, including benzyl acetate, benzyl benzoate linalool, caryophyllene, among many others. It can be used to treat anxiety and depression because it has an uplifting effect. A 2006 study in the journal Taehan Kanho Hakhoe Chi found ylang ylang oil in combination with bergamot and lavender could reduce “psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension" by taking it once a day in four weeks.
Throughout Sri Lanka and India, Vetiver essential oil is known as “the oil of tranquility” for its nervous system-soothing and anxiety-reducing properties. In Ayurvedic medicine it has been observed to relax and calm the mind and it is traditionally used as an essential oil for alleviating stress, anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, trauma and depression. In Traditional Chinese medicine, Vetiver essential oil was prized for its ability to calm the body and mind and to harmonize the emotions.
Another added benefit of diffusion is its ability to clean the air. When the air in a space is stagnant, smelly and unclean — like in the winter when your home is closed up — there can be infectious airborne bacteria, viruses and spores floating about ready to make you sick. But when the right essential oil is diffused, in the correct amount, you can actually kill those little buggers in the air before they get to you.

An explorative study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine on the antidepressant activity in chamomile found that this essential oil “may provide clinically meaningful antidepressant activity that occurs in addition to its previously observed anxiolytic activity.” (11)
