It is important that people research the oils they are using – as not all EO’s are created equally and MANY on the market can be harmful when used improperly. Industry standards are very lax and an EO is only required to have a minimum of 2% essential oil in the bottle to be classified as pure – the rest can be synthetics or fillers. After buying several carrier oils and essential oils on Amazon, I’m now wondering if I’ve wasted my money. It’s just sad that consumers can’t get honest information regarding a product. While not all EO’s and carriers have to be expensive, it’s weeding out the ones that are pure vs. cut/synthetic that’s the hardest. I think this is what turns some newbies off from using EO’s for Therapeutic purposes… they buy an EO expecting a certain result, see none, and then, understandably, think they “just don’t work.”

Whenever I come down with a nasty cold, I make an aromatic inhaler with a synergy of three gentle, cooling oils with an affinity for the respiratory system that are high in monoterpenes and oxides. Hi. I have been buying my eos from a wholesaler called Bulk Apothecary at a very cheap price. They claim to be very pure and high quality, but the labels on products are pretty vague and I dont have much to compare the quality to, as I have never spent the extra money on more expensive ones. I cant. but I am a firm believer in using them, and am trying to build my collection. Do you know much about this company and their supply of eos? I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.
DoTERRA – Same goes for DoTerra in that they are pricey and that you can get a discount for the kit and even buy from someone else who has them. I really like their spa line of soaps in addition to their oils, and their hair serum. The only real noticeable difference in the actual oils that I have experienced between Young Living and DoTERRA is that the Peppermint oil for DT seemed to have a hint of vanilla smell to it, which didn’t affect its use for us at all. There are certain essential oils that should not be taken internally (this can be researched on Mountain Rose Herb website from this article as they list the ones that are beneficial for internal use i.e.: digestive), but some of the common EO’s may be taken internally when mixed with something (i.e.: baked goods, water, etc.). I have personally used lemon and peppermint for this and I really like it. The standard I’ve seen is a drop per 8 ounces although I prefer about half that because I tend to use it in a larger container and drink it through out the day…if you don’t drink it all right away, the flavor seems to increase a bit over time). Be sure to mix/shake it well before drinking.

No, at least they shouldn’t have any preservatives. Think of essential oils like the essence of a plant or flower. To have them last they should come in a colored bottle (brown or blue) and be stored out of sunlight. You only use a small bit so that balances the cost. Keep the lids on the bottles and they’ll be fine. Nothing lasts forever (well, I take that back. Honey may just last forever).

Choose oils from companies that list the Latin name and common name of the label as well as the country of origin. In this way, you can be better assured of buying the correct oil rather than one that may be generically named. Sandalwood essential oil, for example, can come from many different types of sandalwood and many different countries, some better than others.

That’s the ethical pledge taken by physicians for centuries (now, often taken by students upon graduation from medical school). Another important factor to know about the oil is the geographical location each plant was grown. Plants grow naturally and thrive in climates and conditions suitable for their health. Plants farmed in locations outside of their natural habitats will be less effective when distilled. The climate, the soil, the time of year (and sometimes even the time of day) have great effects on the quality of the essential oils and good companies know this.

If asked which ten items I'd want to have with me if marooned on a deserted island, three of the ten would probably be essential oils. I have a diffuser going in my apartment 24/7, my collection has outgrown its home three times now, and my boyfriend affectionately refers to me as "The Witch Doctor" whenever I whip one out of my purse. Needless to say, I'm a huge believer in the healing benefits of the best organic essential oils, but I'm also hyper-aware of the dangers associated with poor-quality ones.
There are a few oils that are good for pain. Clove, Peppermint, wintergreen, would be the main ones. You can layer them by putting on on at a time. If you do that make sure you test an area of skin first to make sure you are not sensative to any of them. Use Pepermint as the last oil since peppermint can be used to push the other oils deeper. Copaiba will also work with the other oils and make them more potent.

Lavender is my favorite essential oil to pair with this deep breathing routine. I'll take a whiff before getting started and let the oil circulate through my body as I go. When used on a consistent basis, lavender can naturally boost mood and aid the body in finding a calm. As is pointed out in the article EOs are not really “Oils” in the sense that they lack the lipid content necessary to make them a true oil. That is why we need carrier oils – that is what allows the EOs to be absorbed into the skin and thus into the cellular level. The carrier picks up the EO and transports it through the lipid barrier of the cells where they work. At a guess the carrier acts as a buffer in the bloodstream limiting the potential irritation of the EO to the bloodstream.

We’re having a problem at our apartment that we fear may be bedbugs, and I’m following a recipe to make a topical treatment that is supposed to protect me from being bitten–since I’m one of those unlucky 30% who are sensitive to their bites–while we undergo whatever steps necessary to rid the premises of the pests. It calls for six drops each of lemongrass oil and tea tree oil, and 10 each of lavender and thyme, in a quarter cup of almond oil. I’m supposed to apply it before bed, but I’m wondering how safe it is to apply on, say, the face, since the insects target any exposed skin, and that’s one of the few areas I can’t really cover. Any knowledge on the matter would be appreciated.
Essential oils capture the biological medicines of plants in a way that is very appealing to western society. Modern essential oils are extracted though a variety of methods, though whichever is best-suited to isolating the greatest amount of pharmacological compounds within the plant tends to become a standard practice. The oils created are readily absorbed into the bloodstream via inhalation or diffusion through the skin. Most of the beneficial particles in essential oils can even cross the blood/brain barrier to positively affect the brain.
Lori, I am relatively new to the essential oils world, but I do remember reading somewhere (check planttherapy.com or edensgarden.com) that essential oils are the pure life essence of the plants from which they are derived. An essential fragrance is often obtained with solvent or alcohol distillation which make the essential fragrance a better choice for making fragrances as they are usually less expensive.
All pure essential oils have therapeutic qualities..Just because an essential oil states Do Not Consume,or does NOT state pure therapeutic grade oils does not mean it is not a 100% pure essential oil. I am in Australia and we are not by law allowed to state that essential oils can be taken orally as the above mentioned companies do.That does not make the oils I use any lesser quality than the above mentioned oils.I am a small company and to have every oil I use tested to be able to state that they are therapeutic grade oils is a large expense when anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that all essential oils have therapeutic qualities. In saying this I know that there is possibly companies that do dilute there oils and do not do the right thing so it is up to consumers to know to deal with a reputable company. These American companies mentioned by Holly sell their EOs to individuals but also by pyramid selling from what I have been told . As for Organic…you may have a farm that states they are organic, but if the farm down the road is not organic and sprays their crops…well HELLO you cannot tell me that spray does not get blown in the wind
One of the main reasons why essential oils can be such an amazing skin treatment is because they can tackle the bacteria that are causing the issues. BTW you don’t die instantly from eating highly processed foods, smoking, drinking…some don’t even feel immediately sickly, doesn’t mean that it’s good for you and that your liver is loving it. So while you can smear EOs all over your newborn or ingest a cocktail each day without noticeable ill-effect and regardless of well documented warnings, it doesn’t necessarily make it safe to do. And if/when you do find out that it causes damage, it’ll be too late.

It's not completely understood how essential oils work, but their power may be due to a relationship between smell and the brain. Scent receptors in the nose send chemical messages via the olfactory nerve to the limbic system - a primitive area of the brain that deals with basic emotions, including anger and fear, and memories. They even have a few organic ones as well. I only use this brand for my cleaning needs because I don't like using my precious Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils on something like cleaning. You also have to pay close attention to their labels as they do sell oils that are already diluted with a carrier oil and their Jasmine oil is cut with fragrance oil to save them money, but they DO label it. (Jasmine is very expensive on its own. Don't buy their Jasmine oil because fragrance oils are what you are trying to avoid.) You can read more about NOW Foods on their FAQ page.
