Essential oils are often used for aromatherapy, a form of alternative medicine in which healing effects are ascribed to aromatic compounds. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.[3] Improper use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation, and children may be particularly susceptible to the toxic effects of improper use.[4][5]

The essential oils industry is not regulated by the FDA, making comparison shopping quite difficult. Some essential oil brands use certain terminologies, others use different names for the same thing. A huge question lately is whether or not you can safely ingest essential oils. Some brands advertise internal use of essential oils, and others advise against it. I recommend to spend some time and get to know an essential oils brand first before you get their products through your door and trust them with the well-being of yourself and your family.

Their Eco-Projects, like the wild agarwood trees in Thailand, reduce illegal harvesting and help create a sustainable forestry system while supporting the livelihoods of the local villagers. And just like Stillpoint, David and Sara offer trainings and certifications in Aromatherapy.

Essential oil (EO) of lavender (LEO; Lavandula angustifolia) is purported to be antibacterial, antifungal, anxiolytic, antidepressant, analgesic, carminative (smooth-muscle relaxant), as well as to have beneficial immunomodulatory effects on wound healing.8-10 Folkloric claims of benefit in anxiety have been supported recently by clinical data, while other studies have produced inconclusive or equivocal results. Although whole-plant formulations may not provide adequate concentrations of active ingredients for effect, EOs are concentrated lipophilic extracts of aromatic terpenoid constituents. They are able to traverse cell membranes and exhibit pharmacologic effects at nanomolar concentrations, making them druglike and increasing suitability for potential pharmaceutical application.11 The objectives of this article are to provide a brief overview of lavender oil in aromatherapy, explore variability in the constituents of lavender oil, summarize its pharmacology and safety profile, and describe its body of research that has been conducted for anxiety.

What’s interesting about Chamomile is that it is also good for calming, healing and reducing inflammation in the digestive tract as well. Most people are not aware that a major portion of our nervous system is located in our intestines, also know as the “enteric nervous system” by doctors or, more commonly, as our “second brain” or “gut brain.” In fact, more than 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut, as well as about 50% of the body’s dopamine. Furthermore, your intestines produce and co-regulate 30 other neurotransmitters identical to those found in your brain that are used by your central nervous system to regulate mood, stress levels, sleep patterns, mental functioning and any number of other essential body processes.
Unfortunately, the scene has been set for unethical business practices as large corporate players drive raw material prices to low levels, often forbidding profit to be made. With rampant adulteration of oils (e.g., cheaper essential oils substituted and falsely labeled—like lavendin for lavender, or a completely synthetic laboratory-made oil labeled as wild-harvested), it’s crucial to be in the know about realistic essential oil prices—particularly for unadulterated, pure, and rare oils. For example, rose, jasmine, and sandalwood being sold in ½-ounce and 1-ounce sizes should raise some eyebrows. A single ounce of rose otto retails for $400 or more!
One of the most revered herbs in the ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda, Holy Basil essential oil has powerful anxiety- and stress-reducing effects, among many other beneficial medicinal properties. Holy Basil is what’s known by herbalists as an adaptogen, meaning that it works to bring the body and mind into balance based on what it most needs in that moment. For example, if you are constantly stressed out and anxious, Holy Basil essential oil will be calming and relaxing. On the other hand, if you are tired and exhausted all the time, Holy Basil can help rejuvenate your body and restore your energy levels.
When inhaled, the medicinal compounds in the oils are absorbed by the lungs and transported to the bloodstream in much the same way that oxygen is. Thanks to the power of the heart, essential oils can circulate the entire body in minutes. Upon entering the bloodstream, the compounds interact with blood cells and body tissues to produce very beneficial results, such as removing toxins like nitric oxide from the blood, reducing tumor sizes, even positively affecting the mood.
Are they an eco-conscious company? One of the reasons I choose the essential oil (and herb) company that I use for my personal and business needs, is because of their sustainable practices. I am very passionate about being eco-friendly and when a business goes to such lengths to be a zero waste company as well as put time and money into other eco-conscious projects, I really have to take notice.

At higher doses—like those found in essential oils—Lemon Balm has a sedative effect. Multiple studies have shown that it has significant anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects and works to improve mood and reduce stress. One study found that 300mg of a Lemon Balm extract taken for 15 days significantly improved anxiety disorders and reduced insomnia symptoms. [14] For those experiencing anxiety or stress accompanied by sleep disorders, Lemon Balm should be your first line of defense. It is one of the most well-studied and safest essential oils for anxiety and stress, making it great to keep on hand for daily use.

Hi. I have been buying my eos from a wholesaler called Bulk Apothecary at a very cheap price. They claim to be very pure and high quality, but the labels on products are pretty vague and I dont have much to compare the quality to, as I have never spent the extra money on more expensive ones. I cant. but I am a firm believer in using them, and am trying to build my collection. Do you know much about this company and their supply of eos? I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.
It’s very important to keep in mind that the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates essential oils mainly as cosmetics, NOT as therapeutic supplements, herbs or medications. So if you come across an essential oil company or salesperson who claims their oils can cure certain diseases or mental illnesses, they are violating federal law and can be prosecuted and fined by the US government.
Essential Oils are known to have a direct effect on the parts of the brain that control anxiety, stress, depression, and fear. In fact, according to a study conducted by Taiwanese PhD researcher, Kai-Jen Chuang, exposure to essential oil for an hour relaxes a person as it decreases the heart rate and blood pressure. In other words, it acts as a stress reliever because of its interaction with the body through absorption of the skin and/or one’s olfactory system. Once the essential oil is in the body, it gives a signal to the limbic system of the brain and tells it to relax.

Bergamot oil is mainly a relaxant as it reduces feelings of anxiety and nervous tension. It stimulates hormones like serotonin and dopamine and creates a feeling of relaxation and sedation. Not only that; it can also fight symptoms of depression like sadness, fatigue, lack of appetite, disinterest, and feelings of helplessness. The oil is said to create a feeling of freshness, energy, and joy by improving one’s circulation of blood.
