According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, essential oils are highly concentrated and contain active ingredients. For instance, it takes 220 lbs of lavender flowers to make 1 lb of lavender essential oil. Depending on their use, most essential oils should be diluted first before use. Diluting essential oils helps spread the aromatic, concentrated molecules over a larger area, making it easier and more comfortable for the body to absorb.
I just started working with doTERRA EOs….Last night I tried a glass of water with one drop of lemon and one of lime to curb a sweet craving. I woke up with terrible heart burn and it’s been bad all day. I’ve never had stomach acid shooting up into my esophagus before. It’s very painful. I’m burping and getting loads or burning… Is there anything i can do? I thought they were safe to ingest…

For the quality offered, Rocky Mountain Oils is really competitive in their pricing. Their USDA certified organic oils will cost a bit more than their traditional non-organic counterparts, but even as such, they are still below the cost of a company like Young Living and therefore much more accessible to anyone getting started and still looking for rock-solid quality.
I agree heather- I LOVE DoTERRA oils!!! I use them every day and we have never been healthier! We have never had a bad reaction to them on our skin, even our little kids, because they are PURE. I used YL all growing up and always had reactions to them, but the DoTERRA are amazing. I also love that you can take most of them internally! I used Oregano to kill strep throat I got last spring! Can’t say enough good about them. I especially love how the company is so in to education and helping you keep yourself and your family healthy.
Do not take essential oils internally, especially oils like wintergreen and eucalyptus. While some essential oils may be used well-diluted in something like toothpaste with safety, it’s generally recognized that there’s no need to take essential oils internally. In fact, there are several toxic essential oils that should be avoided even through skin contact. Luckily, these are NOT common essential oils, and most of them you’ll never find in the store.
Choose oils from companies that list the Latin name and common name of the label as well as the country of origin. In this way, you can be better assured of buying the correct oil rather than one that may be generically named. Sandalwood essential oil, for example, can come from many different types of sandalwood and many different countries, some better than others.
Immediately after receiving my oils, I posted my review on here and it was very negative. I spoke about how the bottles leaked and the oils smelled metallic and, in general, gave a really negative review. I have since visited my local health food store and purchased their versions of some of the oils offered here. Now is where I apologize. I didn't realize the quality oils kis had compared to others. Their eucalyptus and peppermint are the best I found so far! To be fair, the bottles do tend to leak so store them upright. And, I still cannot stand their lavender (which is the bottle that leaked on the rest and tinted my view.) All in all, these are very fine oils and I will be ordering again. Now, if they only sold bigger bottles...
A reputable company will test the oil to meet the standard of the plant species. “Ideally, purchase your oil from a company or manufacturer who performs gas chromatography and mass spectrometry testing,” says Dr. Axe. This kind of testing measures the mass within the oil samples and identifies the compounds. Read the company’s website or call the customer service line to find out about its testing before you purchase the essentials oils.
The use of essential oils for medicinal purposes has an ancient history, going back to early Egyptian, Chinese, and Roman societies. Ever hear of the Hippocratic Oath? That’s the ethical pledge taken by physicians for centuries (now, often taken by students upon graduation from medical school). It’s named for Greek physician, Hippocrates, who studied the effects of essential oils and was a proponent of their healing, health-promoting properties.

Clary sage oil has a great aroma and is a natural antidepressant. It is one of the best natural remedies for anxiety with no associated side effects. It is perfect for uplifting your mood and can help ease the feelings of anxiety by calming your mind while boosting confidence and self-esteem. I used grated carrots covered with Saran wrap for 24 hours followed by grated garlic covered with a large bandaids.( both as poltice) I used the garlic for 48 hours. After that I just applied bandaids as there was a large hole in my hand. Within a week the area that had been covered with carrot/garlic turned black. I lifted the corner and the whole piece came off. Beautiful pink skin was there! The carrots took the pain away instantly and the garlic kept any infection at bay.
Promising Review: “I have tried Vanilla “essential oil” by Aura Cacia and Plant Therapy, but this one is my favorite now. Plant Therapy smells great but it is brown and stained my clothes. Also their CO2 Vanilla is off the charts expensive and their reasonably priced vanilla uses a potentially toxic solvent extraction method. Aura Cacia uses the CO2 method of “extraction” (healthiest, most natural) but it is far more expensive for the same potency. This is absolutely the BEST price for CO2 Vanilla that I have seen.” – mommy2010
Linalyl Acetate is an ester that is found in the trio of essential oils included in this anxiety blend. Linalyl acetate can be helpful in situations of stress, anxiety and depression. Bergamot is a citrus with a beautifully distinctive citrus aroma that contains Linalyl Acetate and smells delightful when combined with clary sage and lavender essential oils.
I'm updating this post years later to add important information. I do not have all of the information in this series on why I didn't choose certain companies so I would appreciate you not accusing me of coming to silly conclusions. I have gotten threatening emails (some of they cryptic threats), and have been warned about being sued if I published certain things.
I found your article via pinterest, very informative, thank you!! I am motivated to get started but overwhelmed not knowing where start. I checked out a few of the websites from some of the brands promoted as the highest quality in the comments section of your article. it seems the prices will start at around 20 dollars per bottle. As someone just starting out, this will be quite the investment if I want to have a variety of oils to use. My question is do you know of any higher quality brands that offer a bundle or sampler package for people like me who are just starting out and will have to purchase maybe five to ten bottles at the same time?
As is pointed out in the article EOs are not really “Oils” in the sense that they lack the lipid content necessary to make them a true oil. That is why we need carrier oils – that is what allows the EOs to be absorbed into the skin and thus into the cellular level. The carrier picks up the EO and transports it through the lipid barrier of the cells where they work. At a guess the carrier acts as a buffer in the bloodstream limiting the potential irritation of the EO to the bloodstream.
In a quote from aromatherapy expert, David Crow, he writes, “[T]he antimicrobial effects of essential oils are most potent not when the oil is used in liquid form… but when pathogens are exposed to the vapors of the oils.” Not only do the oils clean the air and get into your nose, but they are also penetrating your skin, getting into your bloodstream, protecting and healing you.
Shannon, not all essential oils are created equal. Zija International has just launched its patented process of AMÉO Essential Oils product division. In particular their Peppermint Essential Oils is a powerful, distinct oil that immediately ignites the senses. Once inhaled or consumed, it goes right to work stimulating the mind and body. Peppermint oil is used aromatically, topically and internally to aid in digestive health, relieve stress and freshen breath. Massaging with the oil can help relieve skin redness and irritations. As far as usage is concerned AMÉO Peppermint oil is ATIDS based on the following key. A: AROMATICALLY – oils can be inhaled or diffused in the air, T: TOPICALLY – Oils can be applied to skin. Some oils require dilution with a carrier oil, I: INTERNALLY – Oils can be taken internally in food, beverages, or an Améo Veggie Cap, N: NEAT – Oil requires no dilution, D: DILUTE – Oil requires dilution with a carrier oil such as Améo Fractionated Coconut Oil, S: SENSITIVE SKIN – Oils should be used with caution on delicate skin; dilute with carrier oil, P: PHOTOSENSITIVITY – Oils require avoidance of direct sunlight or UV rays for at least 12 hours Member # 2424832
It's understandable for those new to aromatherapy to want every essential oil. But it takes time to build your own apothecary and connect with different scents. If you are looking to get started, I suggest buying three common, well-priced, and effective essential oils with few safety concerns: lavender, tea tree, and sweet orange. Buy a diffuser and use it. Diffusing is an incredibly economical use of oils that allows you to use them every day while not being overwhelmed with learning curves for safety with topical application and DIY product formulation. Additionally, aromatherapy has many uses—health, skin care, cleaning, etc. So, it's important to align the quality of oils with your needs. For instance, I use well-researched, high-quality oils on my face but am less rigid when choosing oils to include in DIY house-cleaning products. And if you're into aromatherapy for skin care, start with hydrosols. Hydrosols are the water-based by-product of the distillation process, but they are much gentler and cheaper than essential oils.
I have bought dozens of essential oils from Piping Rock. Their prices are simply the best, especially considering the free shipping and “Crazy Deals” they offer and change almost daily. You can get 15 ml of 100% neroli oil for about $15, and it’s lovely! They also have a 15 ml bottle of 100% West Indian sandalwood for $39.95, and it smells GREAT. A 15 ml bottle of 100% pure cistus oil is about $13 or $14. It can’t be beat! Many of the normally cheaper oils (peppermint, orange, cedarwood, tangerine, tea tree, pine etc.) are wonderfully priced too -almost a steal. Their rose, jasmine and tuberose blends did not disappoint scent-wise (they weren’t too weak at all). Their oils come in glass bottles with stoppers and pretty labels. I was scared at first because of how cheap their prices are, but I’m glad I took the chance. On top of the great products, they ship SUPER FAST, package well, and my orders are always complete and correct. So happy with this company. Lastly, by signing up with the http://www.mrrebates.com website (it’s free), and accessing piping rock from there, you will get a %10 discount on your purchase, which you eventually receive as a refund in cash that you can have added to your PayPal account. I’ve earned over $50 in refunds! I’ve seen this % go up and down by a little from time to time, but the average is 10% (which it is as of today, 5/8/14). Maybe wait for a “free shipping day” and try some of the cheaper oils to test the waters first. Even when you have to pay for shipping (for orders under $40), the shipping is a flat $3.95 rate!
Plants store essential oils either in external secretory structures, which are found on the surface of the plant, or internal secretory structures, which are found inside the plant material. Usually with plants that have external secretory structures, you just have to lightly touch them and you will notice an aroma imparted to your skin. With plants that have internal secretory structures, you may need to break the leaf or seed in order to get to the aroma/essential oil.

As modern lifestyle becomes more and more demanding, people struggle to find balance between work, family, and leisure. Worrying or getting anxious about different events happens more often. If this uneasy feeling is partnered with muscle tension, sleeping difficulty, restlessness, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty in concentration; you most probably suffer from stress and anxiety.
I learned from reading a FAQ for Beeyoutiful Essential Oils that the reason for smaller essential oils companies labeling their essential oils “not for internal consumption” and are able to price their oils at a much lower price than many of the MLM companies is because of insurance costs. The only way to get a label on their bottles without the “not for internal consumption” words printed on it, is for the company to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on insurance and training programs/literature. This is the reason for such a high price and such a small bottle. A bottle labeled as such is not necessarily a lower quality essential oil, the company just couldn't or didn't want to purchase the high price tag insurance that goes along with labeling for internal consumption.
Other essential oil manufacturers/distributors sell certified organic oils; DoTerra does not. other essential oil manufacturers do not use MLM scams to sell their products; DoTerra does. Other essential oil companies tell people up front that the FDA has not “approved this” info; DoTerra does not. Other companies warn people, as the association for aromatherapists does, that these oils should NEVER be ingested: DoTerra tells people to ingest them (BTW, there IS no “safe dose”; the “safe dose” is “none”). Other companies do not pretend to have scientific evidence when there isn’t any. Other companies don’t make up fake “certifications”. Your ridiculous comparison of tylenol or ibuprofen is just that: those are MADE to be ingested, and essential oils are NEVER meant to be ingested.
I’m curious why you didn’t just get your protein shake powders from YL, if you only wanted one auto-ship order? Seed to Seal is more than a trademarked “CPTG” label. And you have so much more variety in oils and Thieves cleaner, shampoo etc. As you know, we own or coop all of our farms and distill ourselves. We perform 20 tests in triplicate. And we do 1st distillation only – so they contain all the hydrophilic molecules from the plant. Do you know if the Essence line uses 1st distill or complete distill? If they’re fractionated they won’t contain all of the molecules – would have probably lost some sesquiterpenes and smell sweeter. I’ve been to 2 of the European farms and the process is nothing short of amazing. Blending is an art and not so simple as mixing the same oils together to duplicate a blend by another company. It doesn’ t bother me that other companies are getting in on the essential oil bandwagon. More natural solutions – less pharmaceuticals. That’s a good thing! But, I wish someone else would be original for a change. It bothers me that all the companies try to duplicate YL blends. Only the “real thing” gets copied. No one copies a counterfeit. For the record, Valor doesn’t contain Valerian. It’s not a “sleep” blend. It’s for grounding and confidence. Perhaps you are thinking of RutaVaLa. Consider flip-flopping your decision and get your morning protein powder shake from YL. 😉
