It would be helpful if in your grid of oils to not use on kids, if there was a risk column for why each of the specific oils poses a problem. I know someone who sells for YL and she uses this stuff on both her children under 2yrs old because she simply doesn’t “believe” it to be harmful. I think that’s the biggest problem with these companies is they treat their culture as a religion and indoctrinate susceptible people who make up their own claims and rules and spread them to each other while the overarching company can sit back and not worry because the company never actually made any claims.
A panic attack is a sudden feeling of overwhelming anxiety, and it’ll peak within minutes. A person who’s suffering from a panic attack may experience sweating, pounding heart, palpitations, accelerated heart rate, shaking or trembling, feelings of choking, feelings of shortness of breath or smothering, chest pain or discomfort, dizziness, nausea, abdominal distress, fear of dying, fear of losing control or numbness or tingling sensations.
Hi. I’m hearing conflicting opinions regarding using lavender oil on my children. I have a 10 yr. old son & 7 yr. old daughter. I love to use the lavender with peppermint & lemon for my son’s allergies. I will also rub some on his temples for a headache. I will also apply to my daughter’s temples for a headache or put a couple drops in her bath. Is this OK? I’ve heard especially in boys that you should not use lavender because it has estrogen in it.

With growing interest in natural holistic healing and integrative medicine, essential oils are being actively researched and applied in the United States. “There is compelling research on the antiviral and antibacterial properties of oils as well as studies on the impact of essential oils on emotional health, including anxiety, depression, mood, and concentration,” says Jan Stritzler, corrective yoga instructor at Complete Wellness NYC. Her practice is just one of thousands across the U.S. that combines the use of therapeutic grade essential oils with relaxation techniques that include deep breathing, yoga, meditation, massage, and acupuncture, to heal patients from the inside out. “Oils must be kept away from eyes and should not be used on people with high skin sensitivity,” she adds. “Oils are potent and only very small amounts are needed if the quality is therapeutic.” Essential oils can also be combined with a carrier oil, such as pure coconut oil, which is used to dilute the potency as well as prevent skin sensitivity for massage. The following oils, though they are strongly linked with other specific health benefits, have been shown to be helpful in lessening anxiety, boosting mood, and improving sleep. Check out these additional natural remedies for anxiety.
I bought frontier brand cinnamon flavoring at a health food store. Is this cinnamon considered an essential oil? It says to use a few drops in baking cookies, cakes and other recipes, or 2 Tbsp. in a quart in a quart of simmering water with cloves and cinnamon sticks for relaxation. I have been using 1/4tsp. to 1/2tsp and sometimes more several times a day on cereals, tea and other foods thinking it might help control my blood sugar which was edging up in the pre-diabetes range. Is it safe to be consuming this much (organic sunflower oil and organic cinnamon oil are the 2 ingredients listed on bottle) in this manner?

We got rid of a bad bedbug infestation in the house with, well it was either Tea Tree oil or Lavender oil, mixed into spray bottles with 91% alcohol. We weren’t shy about it either, our 1st experience with EOs. We burned through 2oz bottles of each and the bugs vaporized and were gone in two days! They really don’t much like the air that clean and fresh.
I decided that it was time to upgrade my essential oils, and signed up to sell doTERRA essential oils. I didn't really plan on selling essential oils to many people, as I was just looking to get the 25% off discount that you get for being an “Independent Product Consultant” or “IPC” as they call them. When the introductory 3-pack of essential oils (lavender, peppermint, and lemon) came in, I was really excited to smell the difference! The first one that I opened was the peppermint essential oil and I was shocked at what a candy-like smell it had. It smelled so deliciously sweet that I was blown away because all of the other peppermint essential oils that I owned smelled of the herbaceous earthy peppermint that you find in the garden; doTERRA's peppermint essential oils smelled like the finest peppermint candy I had ever smelled. I assumed, that since these essential oils are 100% pure and “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade”, that the higher end brands had better smelling peppermint. This excited me, I could smell a difference! I had been afraid that I wouldn't be able to smell the difference. The funny thing is, I thought that because the doTERRA essential oils smelled better AND are “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade”, that they were better…but I was only listening to the MARKETING.
Are they an eco-conscious company? One of the reasons I choose the essential oil (and herb) company that I use for my personal and business needs, is because of their sustainable practices. I am very passionate about being eco-friendly and when a business goes to such lengths to be a zero waste company as well as put time and money into other eco-conscious projects, I really have to take notice.
An obvious exception to this rule is when certain plants generate an allergic reaction to the user; it is not advisable to use that specific essential oil. Some essential oils can also cause allergic reactions when used undiluted on the skin. It's always good practice to perform a skin reaction test, by applying a small amount of oil to the skin's surface and observing any changes over the course of fifteen minutes.
Distillation process: A gentle, proprietary, steam extraction technique for distilling. Also cold pressing and resin tapping methods for select oils. Low-heat steam distillation process and compression. Plant Therapy works with third-party distillers that can continuously guarantee quality and purity. Steam distillation. They are steam distilled/ cold pressed without any adulteration or synthetic additives.
No, DoTerra has NOT “done research. They are a multi-level marketing company using false claims about products. They pretend their products are the “most pure”, they invented a phrase indicating they are certified when they are not, and they are actually telling people – against ALL evidence that this is safe – to INGEST some of the oils. Stay away.

If you’re looking for German chamomile, which promotes tranquility and relaxation, don’t just buy any bottle with the word “chamomile” on the label. “The specific species of the plant the oil comes makes a big difference in some cases,” says Dr. Burke. For example, plants in the chamomile group have different chemical compositions. Take German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) for instance; it has a different chemical composition than Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis).”If it just says ‘chamomile’ then you should assume it is a mixture of the cheapest chamomile available,” says Dr. Burke. These are the best essential oils for fighting colds and flu.
Keep in mind that common household pets like dogs and cats have a stronger sense of smell than humans and may be more sensitive to essential oils used topically. That’s why essential oils used on pets must first be diluted with a safe binding agent such as almond oil and administered based on the animal’s weight. However, it’s always important to first consult with a veterinarian before using any essential oil on your pet.(26)
I love do terra oils. I have been usining the oils and suppliments internally, neat, and with carriers for over 5 years now. I haven’t died yet, nor my kids or extended family. Network marketing is a great way to market essential oils, because you want to talk to people face to face about the oils and how to use them. There are several companies that I’m sure offer quality essential oils, for me , Doterra has been sufficient for my needs, and I trust the company.
There are many popular, quality essential oils, including those that are Certified USDA Organic, therapeutic grade and 100% pure—with no fillers, bases or additives. For example, being Certified USDA Organic is important for some people because the organic certification can be traced back clear to the seed and plant. Every handler of the product must be certified as well. Additionally, no prohibited pesticides or other toxins are used for Certified USDA Organic products.
Within the resultant oils is a host of health-enhancing benefits. From antihistamine properties, right through to anti-inflammatories, anti-bacterial compounds, and much more in between; different oils are jam-packed with a range of health benefits. From roots right through to bark, leaves, resin, and petals – plants play host to an incredible variety of properties.
It’s not just the purity of the essential oils that determine if an essential oils should be used internally. Even unadulterated, organic & wildcrafted essential oils shouldn’t be used internally unless you’ve been evaluated by a health care practitioner trained at an appropriate clinical level. According to the Association for International Aromatherapy, “An appropriate level of training must include chemistry, anatomy, diagnostics, physiology, formulation guidelines and safety issues regarding each specific internal route (oral, vaginal or rectal).” Just doing so because Young Living said it’s ok doesn’t make it ok. You need to talk to someone who has evaluated you specifically, AND has clinical aromatherapy training.
I’ve seen many comments about using Lavender neat, mainly, on children. Just in case anyone is interested in this case study and research about Lavender and Tea Tree oils causing gynecomastia in boys. YL nor DoTerra could get me to even take a chance on using any oil neat after reading about this. Essential oils are great, but can be dangerous, no matter the maker. Respectfully. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/lavender-tea-tree-oils-may-cause-breast-growth-boys
While essential oils have risen to popularity in the modern era, phytotherapy is as old as humanity itself. The study of natural compounds and extracts used as medicine is found in every culture in history, and evidence of phytotherapy in practice dates back to as early as 3500 B.C.E. Much of the extraction of medically beneficial compounds from plants and their parts was done using simple methods such as hydrodiffusion, vaporization, decoction, and the use of basic solvents.
Young Living – They can be pricey, but at the same time they do have a great quality oil and they have been around for many years. I personally like some of their non-oil purchases because there is a great selection. It’s cheaper if you sign up for a kit (and you can either send in a letter “resigning” as a distributor or let your account go inactive if you just want to buy a starter kit and get some of their oils at the discount for being a member. Or you can buy the individual oils… even better is to find a friend to buy individual oils from if you are not and/or do not want to sign up for them. If you’re interested in buying Young Living, my friend Dayna at Lemon Lime Adventures sells them.
When purchasing oils online, it is not uncommon for larger sizes of essential oils to be shipped in plastic containers to avoid breakage and reduce shipping fees. Essential oils, however, can dissolve plastic bottles and the quality of the oil can deteriorate more rapidly. When receiving oils shipped in plastic or clear glass, be sure to immediately transfer the essential oils to dark colored glass bottles, unless you plan to use the essential oil (i.e. formulate with it) immediately. You can find bottle suppliers listed within AromaWeb's Global Aromatherapy Business Directory. It's a savvy idea to keep empty bottles on hand. If you purchase from a supplier that ships in plastic, ask them how long the oil has been stored in the plastic bottles prior to shipment. Ideally, you want to work with suppliers that transfer to plastic just prior to shipment.
I use peppermint EO after brushing my teeth on my tongue…it lasts so much longer than mouthwash, but is it safe to do this? I just take a couple of drops and rub it all over my tongue. I was concerned, however, after reading this article. Is the way I’m using it considered taking it internally? And, is it dangerous to do this since the oil has not been diluted in a carrier oil? Thanks!!
Thank you so much for the work you put into this . I found it very helpful. I’m just getting the oils and haven’t even purchased anything because I had no idea where to start. I started researching and was shocked at all the brands out there. I want to use a good oil but my funds are limited. I also started making candles and wanted a good brand that will hold the scent all the way to the end of the candle.
Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil is popular for its known ability to help with respiratory issues. This oil is also perfect to use after strenuous exercise or overexertion, it can help with relieving muscle or joint pain. Eucalyptus Globulus can also help with aging by comforting the joints and muscles. Finally, use this oil everyday to help focus the mind, promote body relaxation, and normal circulation.
Essential oils are in fact NOT oils at all, they’ve simply acquired that name because they do not mix with water, just like regular oils. They are a vital liquid present inside living plants — a natural solution of various complex chemical constituents. Scientifically, essential oils are concentrated aromatic volatile plant compounds (‘volatile’ meaning they can change state or evaporate very easily). They are mostly derived from the flowers, leaves, stems and fruits of plants, while some are extracted from the bark and even the sap of trees.
I have yet to come across a YL distributor who is a qualified aromatherapist. Not saying they don’t exist, I just haven’t met one and I check at every trade fair I visit. Possible that the reason you got vague answers from them is because they are preaching the company line that they have been taught without actually knowing/understanding the answer?
Floracopeia’s goal is not only to offer great essential oils, but also to help create sustainable ecological, environmental and economical situations that support the small, rural farmers and distillers, as well as the planet. Their Eco-Projects, like the wild agarwood trees in Thailand, reduce illegal harvesting and help create a sustainable forestry system while supporting the livelihoods of the local villagers. And just like Stillpoint, David and Sara offer trainings and certifications in Aromatherapy.
I just have to say this blog post was God send! I found PT and started using oils in May. I am totally addicted but I have been dealing with a 19 year old rebellion adolescent for awhile but since him graduating on May 2. He hasn’t made any point in finding job. He plays xbox all night sleep on day. We told him he had till August when his 6 month insurance renewal was up to find job or we taking him off insurance and turning his cell phone off. Didn’t seem faze him. My mom also just had moved in with us not being able to drive anymore or be left alone for long for passing out spells. She is a 3 time heart patient and just had another stent put two weeks ago. Since my dad passing two years ago her health has declined more and more. So now being my mom’s full time care taker now my sons disrespect, laziness, arguing all time was just getting to be out of hand. Well after a big drag out fight long story short I told him he didn’t like or rules or won’t listen then pack his stuff I can’t handle him anymore. The cops came and he packed all his stuff and left. I know unfortunately some kids need tough love to grow up but it Is still hard. I knew he needed grow up but couldn’t let go. But I finally had to. He is now in Gods hands and I pray daily protection over him daily but that was only way he was going learn real world get job and grow up to be man I know he can and will me!!! I post all of this because all though I know I did what needed be done it’s still breaks a Mom’s heart to have to push her son out to get him grow up! And reading this post about these oils for anxiety and stress has been a life saver right now. For this mom’s heart is breaking letting her baby boy go buy ut I know God has him and will lead him. So thanks for post it was perfect timing and sorry for the long post. Lol
This is a good starter kit, especially if you don't want to spend a fortune on something that may not be your thing. We don't use all 6 of these, so I'm glad I didn't get suckered into buying a more pricey brand. I've purchased expensive essential oils and less expensive ones like these, and these are a good value. Don't get caught up buying multi-level marketing brands like **terra, just buy what works for you and your budget and enjoy!
Although, there is a method to extract essential oil into a carrier oil. It’s called “infusion”. Herbs are placed in a jar, and the jar is filled with just enough oil to cover the herbs. After at least 2 weeks, the herbs are strained out and you’re left with an infused oil! Sometimes, fresh herbs are placed into the infused oil to make it extra-strong. Infusion produces a very mild oil, though, and there’s no need to dilute it.
With pills and pharmaceuticals now at a record high, it should come as no surprise to learn that more and more people are turning to holistic treatments as a complement to modern medicine – and this is one of the reasons why brands such as doTERRA are becoming increasingly popular. According to an article on PubMed.gov, certain extracts of these oils can even be used to combat salivary estrogen in perimenopausal women – an ability that even modern medicines aren’t able to offer.
Bergamot Organic Essential Oil is popular for its fruity and floral fragrance. This oil has versatile benefits, from easing stress to promoting a healthy mental state during times of grief and sadness. Bergamot can also help clear skin problems and tackle oily skin through gentle cleansing. Finally, add this oil to a muscle massage to help relieve aches or muscle tension caused from fatigue and exercise. The Plant Therapy Bergamot Organic Essential Oil does not contain bergaptine and is safe to use in the sun.
The action of essential oils remains much the same with topical application. This is due to the relative permeability of the skin. The skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system, and can act like a sponge to certain compounds. In fact, studies have shown that the ability of the skin to absorb volatile compounds is actually quite high. While this is an unfavorable trait for a body in a pool full of chlorine, it is quite useful with essential oils. Pure essential oils and oils diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the skin can safely carry medicinal compounds into the bloodstream.
In Germany, a standardized essential oil extract of Lavandula angustifolia (SLO) for oral administration has been developed and approved for use in subsyndromal anxiety. The SLO product (Silexan, W. Spitzner Arzneimittelfabrik GmbH, Ettlingen, Germany), contains the 2 primary constituents of lavender oil—linalool and linalyl acetate—at concentrations of 36.8% and 34.2%, respectively.11 Although SLO has consistent amounts of linalool and linalyl acetate, they comprise only 71% of the oils' overall composition, leaving room for variation in constituents that occur in lower concentrations. The SLO product is available in 80-mg gel capsules for once- or twice-daily administration and is marketed as an over–the-counter dietary supplement called Calm Aid in the United States. The use of a standardized oral formulation in SLO has greatly increased the ability to study lavender oil with a high degree of methodologic rigor, including through randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies. Although not the intended focus of this article, SLO provides the highest-quality clinical evidence currently available for LEO.26,27
You’ll find essential oils offered everywhere from gifts shops to large retailers, and, of course, online. You may want to start your search for essential oils with reputable companies such as DoTERRA, Young Living Essential Oils, Ancient Apothecary, Living Libations and Edens Garden. Keep in mind, essential oils break down over time, so check your expiration dates; you’ll want one that’s two to three years out from the time of purchase. Make sure you avoid these essential oil safety mistakes.
I love essential oils! I use NOW Oils because they are affordable and easy to find. I think Young Living and DoTerra are over priced marketing scams. I tell everyone I use NOW. I have great success using the more reasonable priced oils and they even make some of their own blends. Highly recommend but everyone needs to find what brand works for them.
Plus, I don’t care how wonderful an EO is, I don’t think a certain combo is going to make someone “Thankful” or give them “Couraqe.” Those are personality traits, not a response to treatment. Seems a bit hokey to me. I just gave her the catalog back and didn’t say much. The MLM system is designed to make people antagonize their friends into feeling obligated to purchase stuff.
I’ve enjoyed reading this site. There is a lot of good information and banter (though some isn’t so friendly, chill guys). I myself have only been using EO’s for a little under two years. Yes, they have changed my life and for the first time I feel empowered and able to be in charge of my own health care. I am healthier now than I’ve been in a very long time. I’m one of those persons who will take the time to check things out. My daughter told me about EO’s and a fairly new company, doTERRA. I wanted to believe all the wonderful things she was telling me, but not without checking out the company and putting the products to the test. At a lot of expense for me I did some investigating. So far I’ve found the company to be sound and based on ethical principles. I checked into the CTPG cirtification and found it to be sound also. Though the company pays for these extensive tests, they themselves do not perform them. It is third party and I believe available for other companies. With how extensive these tests are it may not be cost prohibative for many companies, however. I hope that others will follow suit eventually cause I know there are many very good EO companines out there. I do believe in EO’s now as I’ve had remarkable results for many health concerns and haven’t had to go to the doctor since I’ve been using them. I’m glad there is a standard finally set up (you guys should check out testing, it’s remarkable)that insures complete purity so that I may feel safe using these oils in a variety of ways, including internally. And yes, they are safe in their PUREST form for internal use. Other companies that follow suit will just give me more choices and give doTERRA healthy competition. HEALTHY competition is a good thing in my book. These oils are starting to ease their way into western medicine. The coming together of a variety of health care choices is what’s needed in this country, and it’s about time. Keep up the good work everyone in taking charge of your own health and the health of your families. Let’s hear it for the family!!!!
Wow, there’s quite the controversy regarding the ingesting of oils and quality of oils. You know what would be amazing… a post that helps newbies in the EO world to know about the various EO distributors aside from YL and doTerra. I feel like the market is saturated with their jargon and I’d like to know about other suppliers so that I can make my own informed decision. Would love it if you could share any other links to companies, or resources, you might now of so I can further educate myself. TIA.
An absolute is a fragrant liquid that is extracted from the plants using chemical solvents, like alcohol. Though the solvents are removed after the extraction process, there still remains a tiny amount of the chemical in the final product. Absolutes are much thicker and more concentrated than essential oils, and because of this they are often used in skin care products and lotions.
If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome as a browser there is an app/add-on called “adblocker plus”. Download and install it. When you see floating icons like that and they bother you, right-click over them and scroll down to “block element” or “use adblock” and click OK/Submit/Add. This will remove the floating script/image and allow for better viewing.
I’m not sure what you mean when you say “gras” but I wouldn’t recommend using just any essential oil, especially when you are putting it in your mouth. American standards only require 2% essential oils in a bottle that is labeled “100% Pure”. It’s really unfortunate we have such lax standards. Be Young uses the International standards for essential oil purity (E.O.B.B.D.)
Florasol is another solvent used to obtain essential oils. It was originally developed as a refrigerant to replace Freon. Although Florasol is an "ozone-friendly" product, it has a high global warming potential (GWP; 100-yr GWP = 1430). The European Union has banned its use, with a phase-out process that began in 2011, to be completed in 2017. One advantage of Florasol is that the extraction of essential oils occurs at or below room temperature so degradation through high temperature extremes does not occur. The essential oils are mostly pure and contain little to no foreign substances.
This is hands-down the most powerful essential oil for anxiety on the planet. Jatamansi is widely regarded as the most powerfully relaxing and anxiety-reducing herb in the ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda. It has been revered and used for this purpose for thousands of years and up until this very day in India and many parts of Asia.
On essential oil bottles, though, small, high-quality suppliers will always tell you the Latin binomial (indicating the plant genus and species), where and how the oil was distilled, and whether it’s organic or wild-harvested. The Latin name is important because there are many species of certain plant families, like lavender. In fact, there are over 250 species of eucalyptus—only eight of which are commonly used in aromatherapy. Knowing where an oil is from is key to understanding environmental factors that alter chemical constituents and aroma. For instance, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) from France is considered superior to lavender grown in other countries, like Bulgaria.

I’m partial to Plant Therapy and have been very happy with their oils and starter kits. Occasionally I purchase Floracopeia and Now products. Young Living and doTERRA just feel overpriced due to the fact they are an MLM brand and not worth the money when there are companies like Plant Therapy. Since E.O.’s have a shelf life between 1 and 2 years, their price points are a major consideration for me. Thank you for your E.O. list and reviews. I was happy to see Plant Therapy come out on top.
Thank you for all this info. While a patient in the hospital, I would sprinkle a mix of lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils in my pillow. It helped with my headaches and allowed me to relax. The nurses kept coming into my room just to inhale the wonderful scents. They took such great care of me that, after I was discharged, i went home and made 50 bottles of the same mixtures in cobalt blue bottles with roller balls. They loved them so much! They use them at home and at work. Being a nurse myself, I understand what they go through on a daily bases and how much these oils will benefit them. Even one of my doctors took several bottles I’ve made to give to patients!
Essential oils should never be considered replacements for traditional treatment options, such as therapy or medical management. Rather, essential oils should be used to meaningfully augment those treatment methods. When stress or anxiety are related to everyday challenges, essential oils may be all that you need to find balance. In either case, essential oils may be just one component of achieving holistic wellness.
Anxiety can interfere with your daily life including your work, school, and your social life. If not remedied, it can even lead to a more serious case like panic attacks and depression. You might also experience social phobia and worry about being in public or being away from your family. Another effect could be anorexia, in which you’d worry about gaining weight, or hypochondriasis, in which you’d worry about getting a serious illness.
It is very important to note that not all essential oils are safe to take internally. When in doubt, do not ingest it to be on the safe side. However, those that are will give a strong medicinal effect when taken internally. With that being said there are definitely some very strict precautions you must adhere to when taking essential oils internally since they are so strong. These are very important and not to be ignored.
Later, in 1652, botanist Nicholas Culpeper, published The English Physician, a book about herbal remedies.(12) But it wasn’t until 1937 that René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, coined the term “aromatherapy” when he published a book called Aromatherapie about the many uses of essential oils. His inspiration was a laboratory explosion years earlier, during which he burned his arm and plunged it into lavender oil – the closest liquid on hand – which helped to soothe and heal his skin.(13)
In this post, you can see that I ended up recommending them, but this was really a surprise for me. After thinking that I was writing them off, I got a call back from the owner of Native American Nutritionals, and I talked with the owner for a few hours (at first….that turned into many hours in the upcoming month) and found that he really “knew his stuff.”
There is also an argument from YL distributors that their oils come from the best crops in the world. As they grow their own crops and only use their own, not sure how they can claim it’s unarguably the best in the world. Every crop is different. Only sampling every crop, every batch would support that claim. Anyway, I am not a qualified aromatherapist either but my research suggests that YL oils and their advice might be best to avoid.
