Cedarwood oil is great for relieving stress and tension and has a calming effect on the mind. The aroma of cedarwood encourages the release of serotonin, which helps to stabilize moods. Cedarwood oil also stimulates the pineal gland and the brain's limbic region which promotes the release of melatonin. This helps you to fall asleep, improves your sleep quality, and makes you feel more energetic the next day.
Here is a list from one hospital of what they use the oils for:We regularly treat gout, neuropathy, carpel tunnel, sinusitis, headaches, abdominal pain, kidney stone pain, neuralgia, tennis elbow, arthritis, back pain, leg cramps, post-op hip and knee pain and whatever else comes our way. Each patient’s need, including which Young Living Essential Oils were used, is documented in our electronic charting so we can track their outcomes. We always have a good stock of Young Living lavender, peppermint, Peace and Calming, lemongrass, Thieves and plenty of single oils to make blends for gout.
Mountain Rose – This company was my very first experience buying outside of the grocery store. This was mainly because I did my research to find them and they offered both high quality essential oils, but also at great prices and in small sizes. Not only is it not much out of pocket, but I don’t have to buy a huge bottle of something I may not use all that often.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in their Vocabulary of Natural Materials (ISO/D1S9235.2) defines an essential oil as a product made by distillation with either water or steam or by mechanical processing of citrus rinds or by dry distillation of natural materials. Following the distillation, the essential oil is physically separated from the water phase.
What does this trio of essential oils do for you? You may count on them to combine to give you the mental clarity you need for that big final exam, for instance. Just add some drops of peppermint, rosemary and cinnamon oil to your diffuser, and get to studying before that test. It’s not just for taking exams though, as it’s good for clarity and focus on any job you need to get done.
What would be more accurate is that the more “pure” the oil is the more caution you should use in internal dose (“consumption”) – which is one of the least effective ways to use essential oils because they are broken down by the liver before absorption into the blood stream. If an oil is closer to a synthetic flavoring, like that used in chewing gum, then it would be deemed safer for consumption. I assume what YL sells as pure for use in consumption is similar to pure synthetic flavoring.
I’m so glad I found this site when I googled “oils comparable to young living.” I have been using Young Living oils for a few months now, but can’t keep up with the prices. I absolutely love and believe that essential oils help me sleep better, relieve my headaches and improve my life! I have bookmarked your page so I can frequently refer to it. Thank you for putting the time into researching each of these brands and building this site (beautifully done!).
Some essential oils have even been applied to the dead as part of the embalming process. We know this because residues have been found in tombs dating over 2,000 years old! Essential oils are also prevalent in aromatherapy, which was advanced by French surgeon Jean Valnet, who learned that essential oils could help treat soldiers during World War II — a time when medications were scarce.
I would like to start using EO in my home now that I am a mom and have become a lot more aware of the harsh chemicals in all of my cleaning supplies, beauty products and air fresheners. I am currently EBF and know that there are certain EO that I should avoid. Does this mean I shouldn’t be exposed to them at all or that I should not use them topically?
With do-Terra all you are doing is “buying into” the name and the fad; not getting a better oil. I am not saying their oil isn’t good, it may be. EO and their uses have been around for 1000’s of years and do-Terra has just marketed a way to create a “new awareness” for a younger or less knowledgeable generation to, in effect, make them seem the “experts” and the “best” company out there There are plenty of companies out there that sell the same thing, same pureness at a lesser price (because you are not paying for the hype). If you are not using them for sales then why are you buying into all hype. They have to pass on the cost of their great marketing to someone and that’s you, the customer.
Unfortunately, I often find myself cringing and wanting to correct unsafe usage recommendation—most often suggested by those with no proper botany, chemistry, or essential oil training. Currently in the field, an "there’s an oil for that" mentality exists. But aromatic plant medicine involves working with some of nature's strongest powers and explores much more than pairing one oil with a certain therapeutic benefit (i.e., lavender is for sleep).
Ylang Ylang has a romantic, flora aroma that consists of several components, including benzyl acetate, benzyl benzoate linalool, caryophyllene, among many others. It can be used to treat anxiety and depression because it has an uplifting effect. A 2006 study in the journal Taehan Kanho Hakhoe Chi found ylang ylang oil in combination with bergamot and lavender could reduce “psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension" by taking it once a day in four weeks.
I work for an MD and upon seeing it he’s taking out his Rx pad. I told him I wanted to try this first and if I had trouble I would call. The hand was all swollen when he saw it in the AM, but by that evening when he came back the swelling had gone down. Because he believes in toxic drugs, he wouldn’t say anything the remarkable response I was getting.
The benefits of Jasmine oil are vast, but its antidepressant, antibacterial, and aphrodisiac qualities top the list. One study, published in the Journal of Health Research, found that vaporized jasmine has the potential to affect the autonomic nervous system, increasing blood oxygen saturation and alertness. It’s great for skin too. “Jasmine oil helps to hydrate the skin and has been known to be gentle enough to help with eczema, although anyone can use it,” Dr. Milosavljevic says. “If you’re in need of a few extra z’s, this oil can be calming to those having trouble falling asleep thanks to its soothing quality and ability to relieve anxiety.

I think everyone should check out NYROrganic because it truly is the MOST ethical company I have discovered. It has had a thriving store in covenant gardens in the UK for over 30 years. They own their own farms and distilleries. It is a family owned and operated company with all organic herbs and plants. The prices are the most reasonable I have seen for it’s quality. They brought it to the US 3 years ago as a direct sales company and because of the European standards vs the US standards or lack there of I have 110% trust in the products. I am not here to argue but just a suggestion to check it out.
The three essentials—lemon, lavender, and peppermint—make the perfect starter kit. Lemon's purifying properties clear the air and provide a reset and recharge. It's been scientifically proven that lavender can reduce anxiety and relax the brain. Peppermint can help to fight seasonal allergies and boost energy in the room with its potent fragrance.
Many people count on aromatherapy to help improve their mood for the day. This, of course, is a common benefit of relaxation. Take the stress away and relax with some frankincense essential oil. Not only is it great for helping to improve your mood and reduce anxiety, but it is also good for treating symptoms of inflammation. The third benefit of frankincense oil is that it is an immune system booster, and you might want to discover its topical benefits, too.
Another added benefit of diffusion is its ability to clean the air. When the air in a space is stagnant, smelly and unclean — like in the winter when your home is closed up — there can be infectious airborne bacteria, viruses and spores floating about ready to make you sick. But when the right essential oil is diffused, in the correct amount, you can actually kill those little buggers in the air before they get to you.
Studies have shown that essential oils effectively destroy several fungal, viral and bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori and Candida albicans infections. Because antibiotic resistance is becoming such a major threat in modern health care, using essential oils as a form of independent or combination therapy can help to fight bacterial infections in a safer and more natural way. Wonderful information! I just started researching oils and I want to use him for my classroom I’ve also wondered about using them around my cats I know some essential oils are not safe for cats I would never put them on topically, however I diffuse them in my bedroom and they sleep with me Do you have any insight on this topic? Thanks again for such great information !!
That is so kind of you to make some inhalers to help your family out! I think making a couple of inhalers for each situation is always a great idea so they can switch these up every week or so. It looks like your research is paying off as those 3 oils can definitely help with calming. Let us know if you have any other questions! I’m sure your inhalers are going to turn out great 🙂
Obtained from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, this essential oil is strictly for topical use because of its toxicity. However, it can be used externally to treat a wide range of skin conditions, from skin sores and acne to psoriasis and dandruff. In fact, it is the number one herbal remedy for acne and dandruff that doesn’t respond to other treatments.

If you are looking to shop local, go for it. There are many small-business owners who run amazing apothecaries that craft unique blends or products at a fair price. Some of my favorite include Stillpoint Aromatics in Sedona, Arizona; Enfleurage and New York Institute of Aromatherapy—both in NYC; and Eden Botanicals located in Petaluma, California. If you do some research, you may find reputable aromatherapy schools or shops in your area and find that you like some suppliers more than others for certain oils.
Yes, of the 3 brands I am most comfortable using for therapeutic purposes the first is doTerra. Its testing exceeds everything else I’ve come across protecting against not just fillers and chemical extraction, but also against oxidation for potency levels. When air hits the oils for a period of time they oxidize slowly and if that happens they may be less quick and effective than if they had not had that time to oxidize. No other company tests the same number of times for this level of potency. I also love that the testing is done by a third party rather than in house testing.
Choose certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils over synthetic ones. Unnatural chemically altered oils are not considered true essential oils. It is also important to note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate essential oils for quality or safety. Look for USDA Certified Organic or 100% essential oil on the label, instead of anything that says “perfume oil” or “aromatherapy oil,” which indicates the oil may have been blended with unnatural ingredients.
So what’s the bottom line on essential oils for anxiety? There really isn’t one, says Dr. Lee. “Some people find them really helpful, and some people say they do nothing for them,” he says. On the plus side, he says, they’re generally safe when used as directed—although there can be some risks associated with them, especially if they’re ingested orally or applied directly to the skin.
If you have trouble sleeping because of anxiety and racing thoughts, inhaling essential oils at bedtime may help. “Just make sure the scent isn’t so strong that it will wake you once you fall asleep,” says Dr. Lee. Sleeping with a combination diffuser/humidifier will also add moisture to the air, which may also improve sleep quality during seasons when the air is dry. This one boasts more than 2,000 rave Amazon reviews.

I think Lavender and Frankincense are powerhouse oils that have so many uses! For me when emotional issues come up I ‘m finding the Worry Free Synergy, Self Esteem Synergy and Brain Aid Synergy and most anything citrusy are my go to oils. I do find for me most of the time I don’t love Bergamot it has a pungent sour type smell for me which is amusing as most say it is sweet and lovely. I would absolutely love to smell the Neroli single but haven’t yet.
I used lavender essential oil with water as a body spray- it turns out THAT was what my skin reacted to– I thought I had hives on my chest, but it didn’t go away. Fortunately, since I had replaced my toiletry items with natural/homemade, it was easy to determine the lavender as the cause by process of elimination. That has to be the biggest reason to go natural– especially if your skin is sensitive…it allows you to personalize and customize while ensuring that you know every particle of what you are using 🙂 Thanks for everything!
