So what’s the bottom line on essential oils for anxiety? There really isn’t one, says Dr. Lee. “Some people find them really helpful, and some people say they do nothing for them,” he says. On the plus side, he says, they’re generally safe when used as directed—although there can be some risks associated with them, especially if they’re ingested orally or applied directly to the skin.
The effects of anxiety are detrimental to our health. Anxiety and excessive stress-strain the immune system, cause inflammation and can lead to chronic disease and oxidative stress (an imbalance that can cause multiple health issues). Pervasive anxiety can affect your total wellness, including your emotional, personal, social, and professional relationships and health.
A few can be used on cats, but in general I’d go with the advice of Doing Research On Everything First. If my boys don’t like the smell of something (like my fingers after using an oil and before I can get to washing up…funny story there from when my boys were young) there is no way I’ll us it on them. But there’s also the fact that their systems do react differently.
I have bought dozens of essential oils from Piping Rock. Their prices are simply the best, especially considering the free shipping and “Crazy Deals” they offer and change almost daily. You can get 15 ml of 100% neroli oil for about $15, and it’s lovely! They also have a 15 ml bottle of 100% West Indian sandalwood for $39.95, and it smells GREAT. A 15 ml bottle of 100% pure cistus oil is about $13 or $14. It can’t be beat! Many of the normally cheaper oils (peppermint, orange, cedarwood, tangerine, tea tree, pine etc.) are wonderfully priced too -almost a steal. Their rose, jasmine and tuberose blends did not disappoint scent-wise (they weren’t too weak at all). Their oils come in glass bottles with stoppers and pretty labels. I was scared at first because of how cheap their prices are, but I’m glad I took the chance. On top of the great products, they ship SUPER FAST, package well, and my orders are always complete and correct. So happy with this company. Lastly, by signing up with the http://www.mrrebates.com website (it’s free), and accessing piping rock from there, you will get a %10 discount on your purchase, which you eventually receive as a refund in cash that you can have added to your PayPal account. I’ve earned over $50 in refunds! I’ve seen this % go up and down by a little from time to time, but the average is 10% (which it is as of today, 5/8/14). Maybe wait for a “free shipping day” and try some of the cheaper oils to test the waters first. Even when you have to pay for shipping (for orders under $40), the shipping is a flat $3.95 rate!
To answer your questions I have to answer #2 first. Jena is right – there are a limited number of distilleries, D. Gary Young owns 1/3 of them. The products distilled to make EOs are like the contents of tea – they can be distilled multiple times but each time you do so the product you get is progressively weaker. Companies like doTERRA and Young Living only take the 1st distillation which is the strongest and most pure. They label their product therapeutic grade and 100% pure because they have run it through a mass spectrometer and have calculated the constituents in each bottle. Young Living actually refuses to sell any bottle of EO that does not meet their requirements for purity. Less expensive companies use the 2nd, 3rd, and even 5th and 6th distillation. They also dilute their products before marketing them. So it is important to know about the company you are buying from and what distillation they use. Not all distillations are equal.
There is a HUGE difference in quality in essential oils. It is a mistake in this article to say they all ‘come from the same place’ as stated above and indicate they are pretty much the same. In fact, they are not. A company called YOUNG LIVING (based in Utah) produces all of their own oils…they even have their own distilleries in Ecuador and other countries and they are a SEED TO SOIL company; Meaning nothing they obtain ever comes from nor is handled by a second hand source. They do ALL from planting the seeds to harvesting and distilling and bottling the product. The oils from YOUNG LIVING ARE SAFE FOR INTERNAL USE. This may not be true of other oils but of YOUNG LIVING specifically you can take these oils internally. I HAVE ALSO USED THEM ON ALL MY CHILDREN SAFELY INCLUDING MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE WAS UNDER 6 MONTHS SAFELY. I have used these oils internally for more than a year and am finally healing after 7 years of chronic health care that traditional medicine left unresolved. I hope people reading into this who are seeking real healing from a quality and safe essential oil company will explore the safety and health benefits YOUNG LIVING has to offer. Their oils have changed my life.

Many EO users don’t know this because Ameo has only been around for a little over a year, but clinical-grade is the highest EO grade available in the U.S. They are extensively tested to make sure the quality is as high as those oils used in clinical testing or even higher potency. I’ve used most other brands, and know what I know now I would absolutely never use another brand internally unless they were certified organic because of the risk of getting synthetic ingredients and toxins. However, using just ‘organic’ oils does NOT ensure that you have the highest potency/efficacy which you can be sure of when you use Ameo. If you watch the videos on the website you’ll understand more about it. There are videos of the oils penetrating human cells posted for every single batch of oils from Ameo.
I just have to say this blog post was God send! I found PT and started using oils in May. I am totally addicted but I have been dealing with a 19 year old rebellion adolescent for awhile but since him graduating on May 2. He hasn’t made any point in finding job. He plays xbox all night sleep on day. We told him he had till August when his 6 month insurance renewal was up to find job or we taking him off insurance and turning his cell phone off. Didn’t seem faze him. My mom also just had moved in with us not being able to drive anymore or be left alone for long for passing out spells. She is a 3 time heart patient and just had another stent put two weeks ago. Since my dad passing two years ago her health has declined more and more. So now being my mom’s full time care taker now my sons disrespect, laziness, arguing all time was just getting to be out of hand. Well after a big drag out fight long story short I told him he didn’t like or rules or won’t listen then pack his stuff I can’t handle him anymore. The cops came and he packed all his stuff and left. I know unfortunately some kids need tough love to grow up but it Is still hard. I knew he needed grow up but couldn’t let go. But I finally had to. He is now in Gods hands and I pray daily protection over him daily but that was only way he was going learn real world get job and grow up to be man I know he can and will me!!! I post all of this because all though I know I did what needed be done it’s still breaks a Mom’s heart to have to push her son out to get him grow up! And reading this post about these oils for anxiety and stress has been a life saver right now. For this mom’s heart is breaking letting her baby boy go buy ut I know God has him and will lead him. So thanks for post it was perfect timing and sorry for the long post. Lol
The problem I hear most often is “I don’t know where to buy essential oils!” or some friends say “I want to buy quality essential oils buy I don’t know where to start”. So I have compiled a resource of some of the companies I use and love… because I personally believe there is no 1 oil company that is “the best”.  I created this list because I want people to know where they can buy essential oils of all price ranges, but at the best quality and without distributors saying theirs is the best or aroma therapists discounting distributing companies because of their practices.
Danika – you keep saying that “just because Young Living says it’s safe” – we’re not only learning that it’s safe from Young Living – MANY representatives for Young Living have taken it upon themselves to read and educate themselves extensively on the use of EO’s aromatically, topically and internally. Just because you believe that EO’s shouldn’t be used internally (due to your method of training) – doesn’t mean is wrong! For centuries EO’s were used aromatically, topically and INTERNALLY without harmful side effects. I do agree that a level of RESPONSIBILITY needs to used – as with any “medicinal product” – that goes without saying – but to literally sit there and accuse DoTerra or Young Living representatives of being un-educated or willingly harming people – you’re being very ignorant, cruel and narrow-minded.
Another study conducted in Taiwan in 2011 provided clearer and more powerful evidence. The authors selected elementary school teachers, who are known to work under significant stress, and used an inhalation of bergamot C. aurantium var. bergamia essential oil as the method of administration; they focused on the physiological stress signals that are easy to record and straightforward to interpret. They found that even a 10-minute-long weekly inhalation of aromatherapy resulted in a significant reduction of blood pressure and heart rate, and drove autonomic nervous activity toward a balanced state. In addition, participants with moderate and high degrees of anxiety benefited more than the light anxiety group.[4]

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that relies on the powerful sense of smell. Practitioners use the essential oils from plants to heal the mind, body, and soul. Essential oils can be used for a variety of purposes, from boosting mood to relieving migraines, but in this article we’ll focus on how they can be used to calm and relax the mind and body, preparing you for sleep.
Here’s the good news: all the patients who received the aromatherapy hand massage reported less pain and depression. [3] However, no tests were done on the separate essential oils. This study shows that aromatherapy massage with this specific essential oil blend is more effective for pain and depression management than massage alone. The next step would be to test the individual oils in a similar study.

I was wondering if you had any blends you recommend for his bottom? He has has staph before as well. I have researched a LOT and soo many pages referrals to the brand Young living primarily, their RC blend, lemongrass, and Theives Oils to help kill bacteria. However, there are so many indepented distributors.. I have no idea what I am reading is real or just another marketing scam….. so my question is if you heard of that particular brand? or better yet own any?
Rose essential oil comes from the petals of the rose flower, which have an enchanting floral scent that’s known to help relax the senses. A 2014 study revealed that using a rose aromatherapy foot bath may help lower anxiety in pregnant women during labor. Rose essential oil helps promote feelings of hope and joy and boosts self-esteem, which can be beneficial for those suffering from depression.5
Cinnamon and ginger are a great combination, right? They are a great combination of two spices, and they are a great combination of two oils. You may be surprised at the third oil we will recommend adding to the mix, however. It’s orange oil! Orange oil is great, but would you have guessed to add it to cinnamon oil and ginger oil? Among other benefits, this combination of the best essential oils for diffusers is reportedly great to use to provide a cozy wintertime atmosphere.
This refreshing and stimulating essential oil has many different benefits, including promoting memory retention and alertness. Include Rosemary 1,8-Cineole in your skin care routine and shampoo to support healthy hair growth and skin. Diffuse this oil to aid in respiratory troubles. Add this spice and herb oil it to your diet to promote a healthy digestive tract. Rosemary 1,8-Cineole can be included in massages to increase circulation and help relax muscles.
In my aromatherapy certification studies, I have learned you should be very careful about the essential oils that you are ingesting, as they are VERY POTENT. One drop of essential oil can be equivalent to drinking 75 cups of tea of the same herb. It is best to consult a certified aromatherapist for internal use of essential oils. I personally do not suggest using essential oils for internal consumption. In the US, certified aromatherapists can't find insurance for ingestion in their practice because it's considered a medical practice. If you go further and test to get your RA (Registered Aromatherapist) you are prohibited from including ingestion in your practice because it can't be insured unless you are a certified medical professional. It can be very dangerous taking essential oils internally because they can mix with your current medications, your current medical state, and more. Just like taking pharmaceuticals, you  need to consult a professional so that you don't accidentally create a toxic situation.
Whether you’re looking for eucalyptus oil, sandalwood oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil or others, you can save when buying essential oils wholesale from Bulk Apothecary.  We offer a wide range of aromatherapy essential oils and can, upon request, provide a C of A to ensure you get 100% pure oil. Take a look at our current inventory of oils and place your order today.
The popular multi-level marketing companies, dōTERRA and Young Living didn’t make our top picks for several important reasons: their high retail prices, their lack of organic certification for all of their oils, and their insistence that most of their essential oils are safe to take internally not giving any regard to the potential health hazards of self-prescribing without professional clinical supervision.
Lemongrass is another spa staple, and for good reason. People who inhaled three to six drops of the fragrance showed a reduction in their anxiety and tension levels immediately, according to a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Plus, despite responding with anxiousness to a test designed to measure anxiety levels (makes sense), these same people completely recovered from the stress in just five minutes.

The term “pure essential oil” is also a term overused in the aromatherapy industry. The term can clue you in that at least the retailer/supplier is aware of the importance of seeking out pure oils, but don't rely solely on a vendor's use of the term "pure" when deciding to purchase. Pure essential oils can be distilled from poor quality crops, be sitting in someone’s inventory or on a store’s shelves for years, be stored in a way that damages the oils, or be mishandled by vendors so that oils are accidentally mixed during bottling. So, don't get overly impressed by a vendor that labels their oils as "pure."
Another added benefit of diffusion is its ability to clean the air. When the air in a space is stagnant, smelly and unclean — like in the winter when your home is closed up — there can be infectious airborne bacteria, viruses and spores floating about ready to make you sick. But when the right essential oil is diffused, in the correct amount, you can actually kill those little buggers in the air before they get to you.
As a person who suffers from anxiety/ depression. I appreciate information like this! This is one of the main reasons I started using oils and I have already experienced relief with Bergamont (my fav!), Lavender & Frank. I love to diffuse those 3 with Pink Grapefruit and not only does it smell amazing… I instantly feel better! Just purchased Neroli and Chamomile today… can’t wait to see how they work/ smell as well!

What would be more accurate is that the more “pure” the oil is the more caution you should use in internal dose (“consumption”) – which is one of the least effective ways to use essential oils because they are broken down by the liver before absorption into the blood stream. If an oil is closer to a synthetic flavoring, like that used in chewing gum, then it would be deemed safer for consumption. I assume what YL sells as pure for use in consumption is similar to pure synthetic flavoring.
Many essential oils are said to support a normal mood and behavior, including feelings of anxiety. Studies back up these claims, with some research noting that essential oils may act as an “anxiety reducer, mood stabilizer, sedative, pain reliever, anticonvulsive, and neuroprotector.”(20) Thanks to a modern understanding of the brain, researchers can use neuroimaging to identify that essential oil can, in fact, change the way that the brain functions.
The world of essential oils is vast, intriguing, and honestly, a tad confusing. Are these plant extracts actually that powerful? (Yes.) Do I need to be the DIY-loving, crunchy type to use and enjoy them? (Not at all!) Can I just dab a few drops on my skin and call it a day? (Nope—please don't.) What the heck do I use all these different scents for? (We'll tell you!)
In the United States, herbal products are considered dietary supplements, and unlike drugs they do not need approval by the Food and Drug Administration before they come to market. However, the FDA can take action to recall a product if it is found to be unsafe after it hits the market. (in other words, THAT is how companies can put other things in herbal supplements without telling you)

The Essence by Isagenix Essential Oil collection includes six single oils, four blends, a carrier oil, and a diffuser. The single oils are lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, frankincense, tea tree, and peppermint. Each oil delivers specific health and wellness benefits. The four blends were formulated specifically to complement the Isagenix nutritional systems, providing an even greater health and wellness benefit.

In fact, Améo is the only company endorsed by Dr. Daniel Pénoél, a world renown doctor working in the field of aromatherapy since 1977, with an international reputation as an essential oil researcher, aromatic medicine practitioner, educator, and author. Essential Oils is a Trillion $ industry so there is lots of motivation for better health and wellness. I figure if people throughout the world are spending that kind of money they it MUST REALLY work. You can check it out here: http://www.gnnamerica.com/brand-new-ameo-essential-oils-all-oils-are-not-created-equal-you-dont-want-to-miss-this/
I was wondering. You said that you should never take essential oils internally. But I’ve always been told that what you can’t tack internally, you shouldn’t put on your skin. The only exception to this rule I can think of would be something that would hurt you digestive system if you swallowed it, but is okay for your body otherwise. Plus some oils are made out of foods, like rosemary, so why cant we eat the oils? Does something bad happen to the oils after processing? If so, then why would you want it on your skin or in the air you breath.
In short: DO NOT TAKE ESSENTIAL OILS INTERNALLY unless they have been prescribed to you individually by a qualified and clinically-trained medical professional or Clinical Registered Aromatherapist. When working with essential oils you are ultimately playing with chemistry; if you do not know the specific chemistry of the specific oils, and what that specific collection of chemical constituents in that oil can do to your body, then avoid internal administration and stick with the aromatic processes.
Young Living oils are therapeutic grade and some of them can be applied neat but many recommend at least a 1:1 with a carrier. Always research the oils and know how to dilute them but also understand that your body may tell you that 1:4 peppermint is too diluted and isn’t giving you the best benefits. Each person responds to oils differently and should allow their body time to respond to the oil. If after an extended time – YL recommends at least 25 minutes for their oils – you haven’t noticed any affect attempt the oil again with less dilution. Keep track of your responses to each oil and base your use on the notes you have taken.
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters “creates an appetite, forces off impure bile and purifies the system.” But if one bottle would do that, two bottles carried far more power by curing “bad livers and lends strength and cheerfulness.” How? Well, 47% of his concoction was alcohol. For better perspective, whisky contains 35-45% alcohol. At one point, over 6000 bottles were sold each day.
Much of my frustration comes from mlm companies proclaiming that THEIR oils are the best and that therapeutic grade means everything. Because there are not alot of distilleries around the world, many of us are getting our oils from the exact same places. Yet MLM’s tend to jack their prices up to over double in some cases, and use their claims as being the best to fortify the price increase. I do feel for consumers though. It is hard to know who to trust. I know of quite a few wonderful companies out there, besides mine that have wonderful, well priced oils. Yes, as you said, you will also pay for quality, but you need to trust who that supplier is. MLM’s will always have higher prices because of their structure. While that bothers me, it is their exclusivity that bothers me more, especially when I know we are sourcing from the same places.
Sweet orange essential oil, extracted from the peel of the orange fruit, has been shown to improve markers of post-traumatic stress disorder in mice. And in a 2015 randomized clinical trial published in the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research, women in labor who were exposed to orange essential oil had lower anxiety scores than those exposed to distilled water.
A slight dab is all you need to feel the powerful effects of rose essential oil - great for stimulating the mind and promoting a sense of peace, tranquility and well-being. Amongst all the essential oils it has the highest vibrational frequency at 320 MHz. To compare, lavender is approx. 118 MHz, a healthy person vibrates in the range of 62 to 68 MHz and so on. Rose oil is great for those battling with depression. It helps to boost self-esteem and promotes feelings of joy and hope.
How do you know which are the best essential oil brands? After all, this is an industry that isn’t regulated by the FDA. Oil quality can vary based on the distillation process. It also matters if the manufacturer dilutes the pure plant oil with bases or additives. But many of the most popular companies do rigorous testing to prove their oils’ purity.
Chronic stress and anxiety can keep our bodies in a constant state of tension, causing our muscles to feel like a rubber band stretched to its bounds, ready to break apart at any second. Excess cortisol from stress also shuts down our digestive and reproductive systems, because who wants to eat or have babies when our world is at risk? In cave-man times, this made perfect sense, but in today’s world, we often stand in our own way by allowing stress to take dominion. Therapeutic massage can be the perfect way to relieve the effects of chronic stress, especially when paired with the healing power of essential oils.
Great post! I am a lover/addict of essential oils and I found it interesting that you said NOT to take essential oils internally.  There are several oils that I take internally daily, in fact, it is highly recommended per Young Living to do so.  The oils I use are from Young Living and I put them in my water, coffee, on a piece of bread and I cook with them since they are more potent than herbs and their frequency is greater.
Choosing the best essential oil will depend on the health concern or condition that you are trying to remedy. Each essential oil is made up of different compounds and possess different properties, so while some oils are great for relaxing your mind, easing muscle tension and promoting restful sleep, other oils are stimulating, energy boosting and support cognitive function. To find out what essential oil is best for you, do some research on your specific health concern.
There are so many other factors, OMG: a vast change of life and responsibility, the huge challenges of parenthood, the (low) value our society gives parents and mothers, sexism, etc etc. I found it important to explore and heal these things are they came up when I was a young mother, but boy, there was something off chemically for me that no amount of healing addressed.
There is also an argument from YL distributors that their oils come from the best crops in the world. As they grow their own crops and only use their own, not sure how they can claim it’s unarguably the best in the world. Every crop is different. Only sampling every crop, every batch would support that claim. Anyway, I am not a qualified aromatherapist either but my research suggests that YL oils and their advice might be best to avoid.

If you get sick of lavender, Gillerman recommends clary sage. "It's a terrific muscle relaxant, and clary sage has a really potent effect on the hormonal system, which would be highly effective for people whose lives are being ruled by difficult hormonal shifts in their body." Think anything from menstruation and pregnancy to other hormonal disorders. In fact, clary sage oil could reduce cortisol levels by up to 36 percent and has an antidepressant-like effect, according to a study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research. (Did You Also Know That Essential Oils Can Help With PMS Symptoms?)
Hey everyone! I wanted to share my experience with essential oils with you. I have tried many different brands before I came across Young Living essential oils. At first it was more about saving money, but after a while of not getting any results I decided to try out the good stuff. Yes, I am talking about YL(Young Living) lol. Their oils have helped me with both anxiety and depression. If you do all your homework you will learn a lot about YL. They are not just pure essential oils. A lot of time and work is packed into each one of their bottles. The distilling process that they use is done just right also. That is a huge key to a good product. I personally think the only down fall are their prices. Who wouldn’t rather pay $5 for an essential oil? The truth is you get what you pay for? That goes for many things in life. Im a mother and not a wealthy person, so saving cash is very important to me. However, my health is above that. Which is why I chose to take a leap in becoming a wholesale member with YL. Funny part is I went the wholesale route over the retail route for one reason….24% less costs. Who doesnt want to save money these days? After a short time I learned much more about the company and many of their oils. Now I share all my knowledge on FB and hopes to help others find alternative medicine routes. If you decide you want to buy from YL, don’t pass up the 24% discount. There are no crazy catches and all you need is an employer/sponsor ID. I am more than happy to share mine with you! Than if you have any questions as your sponsor I am more than happy to assist you. 1917152 P.S. remember these oils sell themselves. They are just that good. God bless!
Topical application of essential oils can be especially beneficial, since the oils will actually permeate your skin due to their transdermal properties. As a result, not only will you smell them through your olfactory nerve, but they’ll also enter your bloodstream more quickly. However, if you have sensitive skin or allergies, you should avoid applying topically altogether, or otherwise diffuse the oil with a carrier oil such as organic coconut oil, grapeseed oil, or olive oil. Children also should avoid topical application, use more diluted amounts than adults, and shouldn’t begin using essential oils until they are at least 6 months old.
WRONG. I am NOT a distributor. Not a marketer. Not an advertisement. How cynical Brigitte, that you do not think there are people who exist in this world who actually care about dedicating some simple free time here and there to CARING ABOUT, HELPING OTHERS, and SHARING their experiences. It worked for me. I am not saying it will work for everyone. But I do feel obligated to share my healing experiences after more than 7 years of chronic illness and pain. I make ZERO funds from young living. ZERO ZERO ZERO. I am not a salesperson. I am not a distributor. I purchase for myself and my children and husband. No one receives compensation from young living unless they have people signed up under them which I do NOT NOT NOT and that is a fact that could be proven in a court of law somewhere, unlike much of the dribble that is written here by you. Moreover, I know SEVERAL others like me who order from Young living and have NO interest in selling it and make no money from it. No gimmicks. I have used other oils. I am sharing info about my EXPERIENCE with what has worked best for me in the hopes that others can also do their own research based on my opinion and then make educated choices about what is best for themselves. However, we can clearly see YOUR motives of money money money. Gross! and that is just my OPINION. Not a bought and paid for tribute to “MY’ brand.
