Bergamot oil is mainly a relaxant as it reduces feelings of anxiety and nervous tension. It stimulates hormones like serotonin and dopamine and creates a feeling of relaxation and sedation. Not only that; it can also fight symptoms of depression like sadness, fatigue, lack of appetite, disinterest, and feelings of helplessness. The oil is said to create a feeling of freshness, energy, and joy by improving one’s circulation of blood.

Later, in 1652, botanist Nicholas Culpeper, published The English Physician, a book about herbal remedies.(12) But it wasn’t until 1937 that René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, coined the term “aromatherapy” when he published a book called Aromatherapie about the many uses of essential oils. His inspiration was a laboratory explosion years earlier, during which he burned his arm and plunged it into lavender oil – the closest liquid on hand – which helped to soothe and heal his skin.(13)
Evaporative diffusers, also known as the fan style, use the movement of air across an absorbent pad or tray that holds the essential oils. Most units have a small housing and a fan with a speed setting. This simple design often makes them inexpensive to purchase and operate. Some are battery operated and designed for travel. Negatives include the cost of replacement pads that can make this type of diffuser more expensive in the long term.
Avoid buying oils from retailers/suppliers that don't provide the essential oil's botanical (Latin name), country of origin or method of extraction. I've bought good quality oils from companies that don't bother listing this information (though I contact them to confirm this information prior to purchase), but I often wonder why any truly knowledgeable vendor would not realize the importance of automatically including this information. For instance, there are multiple varieties of Bay, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, and so on. Each offers different therapeutic properties. The country of origin for oils is also important because the climate and soil conditions can affect the resulting properties of the oil. Is that rose oil steam distilled or is it an absolute? Any good aromatherapy vendor should realize the necessity for providing this information.
In fact, the doTerra peppermint oil contained ethyl vanillin which is a synthetic compound used for odor! So much for unadulterated oils. You cannot tell how potent, pure, or good an oil is by how beautiful it smells. Some don’t smell anything like you would expect. All of the peppermint essential oils that I have owned smelled like the peppermint that you find in a garden while doTERRA’s peppermint essential oil smells like peppermint candy.
The aroma of a fresh fruit can have an amazing effect! Similar to lime, grapefruit also belongs to the citrus family and its aroma is uplifting, refreshing and clarifying. A great stress buster - grapefruit essential oil is excellent for alleviating mental fatigue, depression and stress induced headaches. An instant whiff can give you the ready-to-go feeling you need to get on with your day.
While I frequently shop and support a number of health food stores in my area and don't want to discourage anyone from supporting their local holistic health related stores, the products that are glaringly absent from my shopping cart at health food stores are essential or carrier oils. I'm not a fan of purchasing essential oils in health food stores as the oils don't sell very quickly and have more risk of aging/oxidizing while sitting on their shelves. Additionally, the brands generally sold in health food stores (but not always) tend to be lower quality oils or risk being stored in less than optimal ways (i.e. when they aren't on the shelf, are they stored in a hot storage area that can be detrimental to the oil). There certainly are exceptions, but health store owners and their staff generally just don't know as much about essential oils as retailers and suppliers that specialize in essential oils and aromatherapy, often with owners that have actively and formally studied and worked with the oils.
I was recently sent a copy of Dr. Mariza Snyder’s Smart Mom’s Guide to Essential Oils to review and I think I’ve been using it almost daily ever since. It starts with information about how to use essential oils and a rundown of the benefits of 25 commonly used oils, then the rest of the book is devoted to recipes. So! Many! Recipes! From home remedies to DIY cleaners and aromatherapy, there’s a little bit of everything in here. It’s a fantastic resource for anyone just starting to experiment with essential oils, but also for seasoned pros too.
Frankincense Carteri Organic essential oil has been used as spiritual incense, in beauty products, and for medicinal purposes in both folk and traditional Chinese cultures. Frankincense helps promote the healing of bruises, swelling, sores, and pain. This oil can also be added to creams and lotions to support healthy skin and alleviate the look of maturing or weathering. Frankincense can also be an aid in times of sadness or grief.

Add essential oils in a 10 mL glass rollerball bottle and fill the rest of the way with your carrier oil. Dab on pulse points (behind the ears, temples, wrists, ankles, over heart, etc.) and down décolletage for immediate calm and tension release. Be sure to avoid rubbing near the eyes, as the menthol in the peppermint may cause discomfort; if this does happen, flush with more carrier oil, NEVER water!
You’ll find essential oils offered everywhere from gifts shops to large retailers, and, of course, online. You may want to start your search for essential oils with reputable companies such as DoTERRA, Young Living Essential Oils, Ancient Apothecary, Living Libations and Edens Garden. Keep in mind, essential oils break down over time, so check your expiration dates; you’ll want one that’s two to three years out from the time of purchase. Make sure you avoid these essential oil safety mistakes.
It's not completely understood how essential oils work, but their power may be due to a relationship between smell and the brain. Scent receptors in the nose send chemical messages via the olfactory nerve to the limbic system - a primitive area of the brain that deals with basic emotions, including anger and fear, and memories. A 2013 study in the journal Current Drug Targets found olfactory signals from essential oils are thought to impact brain chemical production, thereby affecting both mental and physical health.
To test if you’re sensitive to an essential oil (which is probably best to do before using it in a skincare preparation): Combine one drop of essential oil with 1/2 tsp carrier oil (like olive, jojoba, or sweet almond). Rub this on the inside, upper portion of your arm and wait a few hours. If no redness or itching develops, you’re most likely not sensitive to that essential oil.
Great resource! It’s so important to understand the difference between essential oils and “real” — oils, seed oils, carrier oils, fixed oils — are there other names? I’m not sure. Both are wonderful, but they are so so different in structure and application. I’ve noticed a fair amount of misinformation going around where essential oils and carrier oils written about as the same thing or interchangeable. Your clear description is super valuable.
Here are a few of the top-rated essential oil products on Amazon that may help relieve anxiety. If you’re thinking about giving them a try, be sure to loop in any other medical or mental-health professionals you’re currently seeing; they may be able to provide additional guidance or alert you to any potential side effects or interactions for which you could be at risk.
I found this on pinterest so thanks for sharing! I personally love essential oils! I use Butterfly express oils and love them! I’ve been getting foot zones and using EOs. It has really helped! I really liked what the lady that does these explained to me about using Butterfly EOs. She said that the man who trained her to do foot zones used Younger Living oils at first and then started using Butterfly’s EOs because he felt they were more sincere in getting EOs out for all to use. I’m told that these EOs have different energies and I feel that this company truly wants all to experience all that they have to offer. I hope that this helps!
As you’re using essential oils, pay attention to how you feel. Scent is a highly individual experience. Each of us react to smells differently. The right scents for your relaxation and sleep are the ones that make you feel relaxed and sleepy! You may need to experiment with different oils before you find the right one for your nightly routine. If a scent makes you feel alert and awake, it is NOT the right one for sleep. But you can use it in the morning to help get you rolling into your day.
I have nothing to do with this company. Furthermore, I did not spend much time writing about doTerra – and by the way, the term “bashing” is generally reserved for propaganda, i.e., baseless claims based on no evidence, such as yours. As a health care provider, when I come up against an anti-science claim that could be dangerous for consumers, I do take a good look at the evidence and the claims – and when the opportunity arises, I do let people know what I found.

Thanks for the feedback Heather. I’ve made two purchases with Ananda now and the customer service and shipping experience has been great. I guess after reading so many different blogs and sites about how easy it is to “sell” a low grade oil as a high grade oil, I am just hoping that is not the case with my purchases. I have nothing to compare oils to for now, other than reading. Crossing my fingers now and waiting out the time to see how the oils work for me.
The findings of the new study are consistent with earlier work. For example, a 2011 study of 131 herbal tea products found that 33 percent were contaminated. Still, the estimates from the new study should be interpreted with caution, and refined with further research, because the study tested products from just 12 out of the 1,000 companies that make herbal products.
One of the simplest ways to tell your body that you’re in control is by breathing deeply. When we get scared or stressed, our breath shallows, our heart rate increases, and cortisol levels run high. And chronic stress causes prolonged periods of these fight-or-flight reflexes. Deep breathing calms the body, regulates the heart rate, and almost tricks the brain.
The worst deception is when poor companies use synthetic fragrances mixed into vegetable oil and pass it off as true essential oil. This is where the real danger to your health can come: the National Academy of Sciences reported that the 95 percent of synthetic fragrances come from petroleum and have the potential to cause cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.
Young Living ARE the best in my opinion, with their Seed to Seal standards and their Vitality line that are ingestible. I drink some in my water for tons of health benefits, I diffuse them, and use them topically too. So many benefits to using the Young Living brand. And a whole community of like minded people to learn from and make your own roller bottles and recipes with! Healing one drop at a time.

For sleep: A body of research shows that essential oils can provide relief for disrupted sleep and improve sleep quality in adults. A 2017 study compared the effects of aromatherapy and acupressure massage on sleep quality and overall quality of life in women. Researchers found that a blend of sleep-promoting essential oils worked more effectively to improve both sleep quality and quality of life than acupressure. The blended oil was also more effective at improving sleep than a single essential oil, lavender.
I have read quite a bit about YL and DoTerra and several other companies. The information available seems to suggest that Mr Young (founder of YL) is of questionable repute and has been caught out as a fraud selling a few different “natural” healing methods in the past. The people who founded DoTerra used to work for YL but were fired (or chose to leave) when they began to question YL practices, including the establishment of the Ecuadorian processing plant. No accusations were made but there were implications that perhaps what YL are actually doing is not aligned with what they are preaching. I was very interested to read the earlier comment that YL oils left stains on construction paper using the testing method suggested in the article.
If you're already a fan of Fractionated Coconut Oil, you need to try our organic version! Unlike other coconut oils on the market, our Organic Fractionated Coconut carrier oil is available with MCT (Medium-Chain Triglyceride), and uses a USDA approved NOP (National Organic Program) to extract the oil. This oil is created chemical and heat free which allows for a clear, refined, and odorless oil that won't solidify in cooler tempatures. Organic Fractionated Coconut oil's quick absorbtion rate and and moisturizing properties make it perfect for your skin straight out of the bottle, but this oil is also a great makeup remover and cleanser for your skin or hair. This oil is also the perfect addition to lotions, creams, and roller blends. Use this oil without feeling leaving you soft and moistured without feeling greasy. Plant Therapy's Organic Fractionated Coconut Carrier oil is a staple for every household or beauty routine!

I just want to add a note here on behalf of those companies like NOW and Aura Cacia and all the others from the health food store I’ve tried. They may have all good intentions. They may or may not be testing their oils, anyone can give a test. The mass spectrometry test will pass with a very high amounts of filler oils and chemicals from extraction in it. These issues may not necessarily be from the owners of companies that get oils out there, it may be from the farmers selling the oils and trying to get an extra buck or from somewhere else in the line of business people it goes through before it gets to our shelves. Our world is very focused on money so who knows where the fault really falls. If you’re wondering what brand you should use, I would recommend the three above… doTerra, TRUessence, Young Living… however, I think its better for people to decide for themselves, so maybe do your own smell test. I’ve also been told that if an oil says “not for internal consumption” then there’s a pretty high chance that it is not as pure as it should be to be safe (at least if its is on the FDA’s GRAS list). I know this is long, but hey you asked right? And anyhow, education brings true freedom.
I found your article via pinterest, very informative, thank you!! I am motivated to get started but overwhelmed not knowing where start. I checked out a few of the websites from some of the brands promoted as the highest quality in the comments section of your article. it seems the prices will start at around 20 dollars per bottle. As someone just starting out, this will be quite the investment if I want to have a variety of oils to use. My question is do you know of any higher quality brands that offer a bundle or sampler package for people like me who are just starting out and will have to purchase maybe five to ten bottles at the same time?
Allelopathy occurs when a plant releases chemicals to prevent competing vegetation from growing within its area or zone. An often-cited example is in southern California, home to the dominant shrubs Salvia leucophylla (sage bush) and Artemisia californica (a type of sage). Both species release allelopathic terpenoids, eucalyptol and camphor, into the surrounding area, which effectively prevents other plant species from growing around them. This is allelopathy. Chemicals that deter competing growth (terpenes, for example) are referred to as allelochemics.
Wholesale essential oils are not all created equal and although many companies claim they sell pure oils, most don't. True essential oils are very expensive to produce, and many companies in the industry take shortcuts to save on costs. At Bulk Apothecary, we offer 100% pure high-grade aromatherapy essential oils at affordable prices. We are one of the largest importers and domestic purchasers of many of these oils and offer them at some of the best prices available.  Other companies cut their essential oils with much cheaper carrier oils in order to sell them at a huge profit.  However, if you really want to yield the aromatherapeutic benefits that aromatherapy oils have to offer, it is important to only buy premium quality product. If you are purchasing oils that have been diluted without your knowledge, you won’t be able to use them as effectively as possible, and you won’t see the same benefits.
Here’s the good news: all the patients who received the aromatherapy hand massage reported less pain and depression. [3] However, no tests were done on the separate essential oils. This study shows that aromatherapy massage with this specific essential oil blend is more effective for pain and depression management than massage alone. The next step would be to test the individual oils in a similar study.

Hi Linda! Just wanted to let you know that NAN oils are amazing! I have been using them for quite awhile and there is no comparison to any health store oils or most online. It’s fortunate that there is so much info out there today about EO’s as I bought the book that’s listed, “The Compete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy” when it came out in 1991! That was before I even knew about the internet! Just a few things to keep in mind: NANs kits are a large collection and also 15mm, that’s why they seem so expensive. You can always buy just what you want, even in a 5mm. Nice size to try if your unsure. Also, do your OWN research instead of listening to sales pitches from paid representatives. A high percentage are gullible parrots. But to each their own. Just keep reading about EOs as you can never learn enough! I almost actually hate to bring this up, just remember I am NOT paid for indorsing – Read the articles in her blog, “wholenewmom”, about comparing EO companies. She really spells out differences between a lot of the well-known companies & what to look for in any. It’s Very informative! And I was blown away at the conclusion. Good Luck and Be Well!
So I am very "new" to Essential Oils and was looking to duplicate a "spa like" pure EO blend I purchased in London. My tendency is to look at the # of Amazon reviews for a product before reading them because if the numbers are high, then it's obviously a best seller.... right? In this case, I wondered why the prices were soooo vastly all over the board so I was puzzled....
A 2014 systematic review conducted at the University of Minnesota evaluated 15 quantitative studies, including 11 randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of essential oils on sleep. Researchers found that a majority of the study findings suggest a positive effect of essential oils on sleep deprivation and disturbances. Lavender oil was the most frequently studied oil and of all evaluated studies, no adverse events were reported. (20)

They're made from parts of certain plants like leaves, herbs, barks, and rinds. Makers use different methods to concentrate them into oils. You may add them to vegetable oils, creams, or bath gels. Or you might smell them, rub them on your skin, or put them in your bath. Some research shows that they can be helpful, if you know how to use them the right way. Always check the label and ask your doctor if you’re not sure if they’re OK for you to use.

I am just starting out in essential oils, but so far I really like this set. It is the "basics" that everyone getting started should have. I have definitely used the lavendar oil most often. About a week after getting the set, my son splashed some hot oil from a pan on both of us. I applied lavendar oil to his burn and mine, not only did it take the sting out of the burns, the burn on his arm did not blister. Since then I have used peppermint oil when he was suffering from nausea and vomiting (flu) and I have used the lavendar oil for a sunburn. No peeling and almost immediate relief of pain. I am sure there is so much more I could be doing. As I learn more uses, I will update. The oils seem to be excellent quality. They are therapeutic grade. I think this is an excellent starter set, if like me, you are new to essential oils and eager to learn their uses.

This is hands-down the most powerful essential oil for anxiety on the planet. Jatamansi is widely regarded as the most powerfully relaxing and anxiety-reducing herb in the ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda. It has been revered and used for this purpose for thousands of years and up until this very day in India and many parts of Asia.

Many people prefer to use essential oils because they’re natural and don’t create the common side effects associated with many sleep medications, such as daytime drowsiness or more serious health risks. For example, a 2010 study found smelling jasmine to be just as effective at calming the nerves as a sleeping pill or sedative, but without any adverse side effects.

There's nothing like the refreshing scent of peppermint! Minty oils like peppermint, eucalyptus and spearmint are excellent for increasing mental clarity, concentration and staying alert. Whether you use them to feel fresh in the morning, or to snap out off a mid-afternoon lull - potent and powerful, minty oils are incredibly versatile and will give you an instant caffeine-free energy boost when you need it!

I think it’s wonderful that you’re starting somewhere. I used the NOW brand for several years with great results. I’ve recently discovered Young Living and WOW way different. I’ve found that the brands in our local stores are cut with carriers and preservatives. Young Living is completely pure. I mean a small bottle of sandalwood from NOW costs about $15. Young Living’s cost well over $100. The difference is that YL offers completely pure oils. A closer look at my NOW sandalwood bottle showed that it was in a carrier oil. I prefer to buy my own carriers and mix my favorite oils into them on my own. Wishing you continued success!

The Rapid Relief essential oil blend helps promote comfort and alleviate feelings of pain, an issue for many people's daily lives. This oil is made up of 100% Peppermint, Clove Bud, Laurel Leaf, Black Pepper, Cinnamon Cassia, Ginger Root, German Chamomile, Juniper Berry, and Thyme essential oils. The mixture of these high-quality oils will help aid in muscle relaxation, endorse circulation, and bring ease to any areas of concern. This oil is the perfect addition to any lotion, carrier oil, or other recipe to reap its many benefits.

Hi Crunchy Betty, I love your blog and recently bought a whole bunch of carrier oils along with Lavender 40/42 essential oil . I didn’t realise this wasn’t the same as Lavender essential oil and used it (diluted with jojoba oil) on my face – the next morning I had tiny bumps all over my face which were red and very itchy, with slight swelling! Do you know what the difference between these two different oils are, and if the 40/42 is more dangerous to use than the other?

This curated list of the top 10 best essential oil brands contains oil companies discovered by myself during my training towards becoming a Certified Aromatherapist. This is a list, not a ranking. The essential oil brand that is best for you will depend on a mix of things: how you’ll use the essential oils; how many of them you need; and how much you’re comfortable paying for your oils.
The Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils actually come in a variety of price ranges. I’ve found some of them quite approachable, but certain oils are again on the expensive side. It depends which one(s) you’re looking for, so the best thing you can do is have a look at their website and shop for the oils you’d like. Keep in mind, this will all be certified organic that you’re purchasing, so the extra dollars spent may be worth the investment.

Inhalation: Rub 2 to 3 drops of lavender essential oil into your palms and then take a deep breath. The essential oil quickly enters your bloodstream through your hands while also stimulating neural connections via the olfactory bulb to provide a nearly instant feeling of relaxation. This method is perfect for use while traveling, in the office, or in crowded spaces.
Another well-researched essential oils benefit is their role in aiding and improving digestion. Some oils help to relieve upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach spasms and even conditions of the gastrointestinal system, like IBS. Essential oils can also aid your digestion by helping to stimulate digestive enzymes that make it easier to break down and absorb the nutrients, fats and protein that you need.
I went through hell with one of my teen kids! Your story breaks my heart! Everyone said to me, “it will get better”, and I had a hard time believing it! It really does get better with time and guidance. I also have an elderly widowed mom, and she will likely not be driving much longer. I am her only family. So, I understand your stress! Feel free to email me if you need to chat or vent. I was very much alone with my struggles with my teen, and, it’s a very lonely place to be! Wishing you the best!
Most essential oils on the market shouldn’t be taken internally because they aren’t pure.  I second the statement made by someone up above — I use Young Living oils internally (and externally) on a daily basis!  I was able to get off four different prescription drugs I was on with Young Living oils.  I teach people how to use them for emergency preparedness/collapse medicine purposes, as well as day-to-day.  I don’t want to self-promote, but if you want to see my website send me an email!  [email protected]
When the scent of an essential oil is inhaled, molecules enter the nasal cavities and stimulate a firing of mental response in the limbic system of the brain. These stimulants regulate stress or calming responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, production of hormones and blood pressure. Aromatherapy can be obtained by using it in a bath, as direct inhalations, hot water vapor, vaporizer or humidifier, fan, vent, perfume, cologne, or — one of my favorites — through aromatherapy diffusers.
