Essential oils can significantly benefit your mental and physical health, improve your skin and hair and even help your pup, but only if you choose quality ones. Look for ones labeled “100 percent natural oil,” which indicates it has no synthetic components or carrier oils and has not been diluted,” says Briant Burke, MD, MS who has developed therapeutically effective, clinically-tested formulas, such as HeelAid. Before diving into essential oils, sniff out the details with this primer for essential oils.
Throughout Sri Lanka and India, Vetiver essential oil is known as “the oil of tranquility” for its nervous system-soothing and anxiety-reducing properties. In Ayurvedic medicine it has been observed to relax and calm the mind and it is traditionally used as an essential oil for alleviating stress, anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, trauma and depression. In Traditional Chinese medicine, Vetiver essential oil was prized for its ability to calm the body and mind and to harmonize the emotions.
Vetiver has been used in aromatherapy as an essential oil for anxiety and stress for centuries, and recent research is confirming that indeed that plant has effects on anxiety pathways. One study on rats found that Vetiver essential oil attenuated the stress and anxiety response in the amygdala of rats, an area of the brain associated with fear and other similar emotions.

Hello! I enjoyed your post and it was very informative. I tried the construction paper test with my Mountain Rose Herbs oils and there was a residue! Tried with peppermint and with fennel. Sigh. I have ordered my oils from this company for years. Any thoughts? I feel like they are a legit company, no multi-level marketing schemes going on, no president with a shady psychotic past. What to do, what to do???
Plant Therapy are our number one choice when it comes to buying essential oils for many reasons. All oils are 100% pure, free of additives, adulterants and dilutions, the prices are affordable, the website is high quality and easy to navigate, they offer free shipping, a 90 day guarantee and free returns. They also offer pretty much every oil under the sun, have a range of organic oils, high quality starter kits and even a selection of diffusers and accessories.
Inhalation is a popular method of benefiting from the potential medicinal properties and aromatic qualities of each essential oil. A diffuser works by breaking apart the essential oil molecules. This makes them light enough to float into the air. The molecules will then float with the air current, helping to spread the aromas and potentially beneficial volatile oils and other plant compounds. Several types of diffusers disperse the essential oils into the air. Each has good and bad qualities that may make them ideal for some people, but not everybody.
I just wanted to correct you, when you say that essential oils should not be taken internally. This is one huge difference, and deciding factor for how I select an essential oil. If I can’t eat it, I won’t use it on my skin. Anything your skin contacts, goes to your blood stream. If an oil is unsafe for consumption, you should not use it. Many oils like peppermint, wintergreen, basil, lemon, lavender, clove, etc. are great for problems like headache, nausea, indigestion, pain, flu, and other ailments. One drop under the tongue, or mixed with a teaspoonbof honey is a great way to get fast releif and healing properties to your cells without harm. This is why the brand does matter. The extraction method is very important and has everything to do with the grade of oil in the end result. Not all oils are created equal, that’s for sure. Young Living is the brand I use and trust.
Supercritical carbon dioxide is used as a solvent in supercritical fluid extraction. This method can avoid petrochemical residues in the product and the loss of some "top notes" when steam distillation is used. It does not yield an absolute directly. The supercritical carbon dioxide will extract both the waxes and the essential oils that make up the concrete. Subsequent processing with liquid carbon dioxide, achieved in the same extractor by merely lowering the extraction temperature, will separate the waxes from the essential oils. This lower temperature process prevents the decomposition and denaturing of compounds. When the extraction is complete, the pressure is reduced to ambient and the carbon dioxide reverts to a gas, leaving no residue.
You've likely heard about the soothing, sleep-inducing effects of chamomile tea, and those extend to chamomile essential oil. Chamomile is also a base note, so it has that same grounding effect as vetiver, says Gillerman. But studies have also shown a proven physiological response to it. Chamomile may actually "provide clinically meaningful antidepressant activity," according to research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. (PS: These Five Aromatherapy Benefits Will Change Your Life.)
What I found most impressive is that they control their product right from the very botanical seeds; cultivating, harvesting and distilling many of their essential oils right on their very own farms across the world. This gives Young Living the unique ability to verify their quality standards at every step of the process. For more information on this, check out their proprietary Seed to Seal production process.
Originated from Spain and distilled from the leaves of the Cypress tree, this oil has many therapeutic benefits and a crisp, clean scent with a hint of wood and spice. Cypress is popular choice to help promote respiratory health throughout the year, especially during seasons where airborne illnesses are more prevalent. The calming scent of this oil bring comfort and strength during times of loss or sadness. Cypress can also help with effects of aging and calm the appearance of "spider" veins. Finally, add this oil to any recipes to help extinguish unwanted odors.
Very informative article! I’ve been using Worry Free and Let it Go with Srlf Estemm on my wish list to make liquid Xanax so I can bcn odd the mediciavagion. I have all of these except for Neroli which I also have on my wish list so this is so great to know the other options I can diffuse and make inhalers to help. I can’t thank you enough PT for giving us the resources to help ourselves! This company is so amazing! I love you guys!
Anyone who’s smelled fresh cookies baking in the oven knows that scents have a strong influence on how we feel. When we smell something, our olfactory nerve sends signals directory to our limbic system and amygdala, the parts of our brain responsible for our memory or mood. That’s why certain scents can instantly make us feel brighter, or recall a favorite memory.

Many essential oils have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-fungal properties that help to boost your immune system and fight infections. The chemical substances found in essential oils, such as terpenes, esters, phenolics, ethers and ketones, have the potential to fight foreign pathogens that can threaten your health. Some of the best essential oils for your immunity include oregano, myrrh, ginger, lemon, eucalyptus, frankincense, peppermint (or Mentha piperita) and cinnamon.
Thank you so much for this excellent distillation! I’m just beginning to use EO’s, and have had such excellent results that I am encouraged to try more — thank you for helping me find reputable companies to purchase from. The pricing comparison was especially helpful. My only issue so far is with Aura Cacia — the lids are so hard to get off the bottles — my 71 year old hands just can’t exert that much pressure any more — I emailed the company thru their website, and was sent alternative bottle caps, that didn’t even fit the bottles. Alas, not buying from them any more, which is unfortunate, since they are readily available in local stores. However, online ordering is easy and quick. Thank you once again!
Nearly all essential oils have a range of varied uses, and many are able to boost the health of a user’s skin as part of their arsenal. More and more individuals are finding that they don’t need to use expensive beauty products, or those that are full of chemicals – as natural treatments can be just as good, if not more effective, than counterparts with high price tags and that are developed in labs. From improving acne to reducing the effects of aging, there are many reasons why individuals should switch to the use of essential oils for their daily skin care regime.
This refreshing and stimulating essential oil has many different benefits, including promoting memory retention and alertness. Include Rosemary 1,8-Cineole in your skin care routine and shampoo to support healthy hair growth and skin. Diffuse this oil to aid in respiratory troubles. Add this spice and herb oil it to your diet to promote a healthy digestive tract. Rosemary 1,8-Cineole can be included in massages to increase circulation and help relax muscles.
Shannon, not all essential oils are created equal. Zija International has just launched its patented process of AMÉO Essential Oils product division. In particular their Peppermint Essential Oils is a powerful, distinct oil that immediately ignites the senses. Once inhaled or consumed, it goes right to work stimulating the mind and body. Peppermint oil is used aromatically, topically and internally to aid in digestive health, relieve stress and freshen breath. Massaging with the oil can help relieve skin redness and irritations. As far as usage is concerned AMÉO Peppermint oil is ATIDS based on the following key. A: AROMATICALLY – oils can be inhaled or diffused in the air, T: TOPICALLY – Oils can be applied to skin. #1- Therapeutic Grade is just a selling gimmick. If EO’s are pure, they are equal to any other. There are only a few distillery’s so many of the EO’s come from the same distillery then sold under several names. You should always buy from a company that is willing to give you the GC/MS reports regarding the Lot your EO bottle is from. That tells the constituents of the EO and would indicate if adulterated in any way.
In ancient China, the Huangdi Neijing, or The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine, recommends using essential oils to support health.(10) In ancient Greece and Rome, essential oils were used for baths, massages, and as perfume. Persia is often credited with being the first society to use distilled essential oils as early as 980 AD, a discovery standardized by practitioners of medieval Persian herbal medicine.(11)
Try keeping some essential oils handy, and use them whenever you find yourself feeling tired. Keep a bottle in the car, office, or gym bag. Alternatively, take energy-boosting essential oil blends anywhere you go with portable aromatherapy diffusers. Whichever method of using these essential oils you choose, all you have to do is take a deep breath and tackle the day.
It’s been a few months since you posted, and I hope you are feeling better! My youngest is now 10 and I am JUST now, as I am learning about my peri-menopausal experience, getting an understanding on my postpartum experience. I struggled for months with each kid and now I am pretty sure the base-line physical issue was hormonal imbalance. I have been taking a product from Young Living called Progessence Plus, and it has been a life-saver– I wish I had it when I was postpartum. Look it up, theres a PDF by Dr. Dan Purser talking about the product that answers a lot of questions and helped me a lot when I was researching. There are other oils from YL that help a lot with hormonal issues, Dragon Time, Schlaressence, Lady Schlerol. (Use my distributer #1112524 🙂 if you want to buy from YL)
Although highly fragrant, concretes contain large quantities of non-fragrant waxes and resins. Often, another solvent, such as ethyl alcohol, is used to extract the fragrant oil from the concrete. The alcohol solution is chilled to −18 °C (0 °F) for more than 48 hours which causes the waxes and lipids to precipitate out. The precipitates are then filtered out and the ethanol is removed from the remaining solution by evaporation, vacuum purge, or both, leaving behind the absolute.
I am motivated to use oils due to their natural healing abilities. YLEO are pure. They offer a seed to seal guarantee. I trust the quality. I used YLEO Thieves to treat pre-cancer growths on my arm, I use lavender instead of a sleep aid, Stress Away instead of anti-anxiety Meds, I use oils for pain control, face/skin care – in fact, I now make my own products, make my own laundry soap & scent with YLEO. I could go on & on. The impact YLEO have had on my life is huge. Being a member of the Young Living organization provides me the support I need to learn more & more about using essential oils.
Aura Cacia essential oils are packaged in amber glass bottles, which ensures that light does not disrupt the oils’ integrity and individual properties. The essential oil products are also 100% pure, not containing any additional bases, fillers, or additives. While not all of their oils are certified organic, they do have some certified organic oils in their line-up. If organic is important to you, shop for those specific product and look out for the correct “certified organic” label.
Today’s Peppermint plant is actually the hybrid result of crossbreeding watermint and spearmint that provides a pleasing minty aroma and taste. Used topically, Peppermint calms and relaxes joint and muscle discomfort. Used internally, this oil promotes clear breathing, soothes an upset stomach, and aids digestive wellness. Used aromatically, Peppermint essential oil fills the air with a fresh, cool, minty scent that invigorates mental clarity and encourages healthy respiratory functions.
The more of the particles you inhale—and the closer they are to your nose—the stronger the effect of the essential oil. Gillerman recommends putting a bit on your fingertips and dabbing it on your temples and the spot between your eyebrows at the top of the bridge of your nose. "That's a very potent point for calming the nervous system," she says. Slowly breathe in and out for five to six breaths. "You can also put a drop on the palm of each hand, and then cup your hands to your face and breathe in," she says. "This is nice because you can hold your hands as close or as far away from your face as you want."
I have a question about allergies. I am not actually allergic to any food but I have oral allergy syndrome from having hay fever. Certain fresh veggies and fruits cause burning and itching in my mouth and sometimes other worse symptoms. I can’t eat avocados. Generally when these foods are slightly cooked or overly ripe I can have them. I’ve been wondering about using essential oils with avocado oil. I’ve had weird reactions with raw almonds but not roasted. It’s so weird! I’m weary of using almond or avocado carrier oils but I like the skin benifits
Multiple scientific studies conducted on the plant have found that supplementation with various extracts of Holy Basil decreased stress hormone levels and corticosterone in particular. [3,5,6,7,8] Corticosterone is associated with feelings of stress and anxiety when released by the adrenal glands. In experiments on rats, the compound Eugenol, which is found in abundance in Holy Basil, has been shown to reduce neurochemicals and hormones related to stress and anxiety as well.
Thank you for asking this question! I have spent countless hours researching this very question, and have even contacted Young Living to get their response, all to no avail! I feel like someone is not being honest, and while I want to just go with YL, the fact that at first they didn’t respond and when the finally did (through a consultant who was on a live chat), the response was vague. It just makes me question if there is corruption in the EO industry like so many others. Would LOVE for someone to respond to this question!
What does this trio of essential oils do for you? You may count on them to combine to give you the mental clarity you need for that big final exam, for instance. Just add some drops of peppermint, rosemary and cinnamon oil to your diffuser, and get to studying before that test. It’s not just for taking exams though, as it’s good for clarity and focus on any job you need to get done.
You seem to be a bit touchy about research. I would suggest that you go to PubMed and search for “essential oils.” You will definitely find some scholarly research that has been published on the subject….but not nearly enough. (If you need a comparison, do a search for your favorite pharmaceutical drug). Given that publications are the currency for academic research, this would suggest that there aren’t as many researchers studying these essential oils as you seem to think.

Essential oils aren’t created with carrier oils – they’re extracted using a variety of methods. The most common are cold-pressing and steam distillation. Most citrus oils are cold-pressed (the name is pretty self-explanatory: they’re pressed), but almost all other essential oils are steam-distilled: the plant matter is placed above steaming hot water, the steam takes essential oil from the plant, and travels through a condenser. After condensing, you’re left with water and a tiiiiiny bit of essential oil floating on top.
something else I found that kills bedbugs, and their eggs ON CONTACT is rubbing alcohol. I had a mild infestation from a bed frame I got from someone, and I kept a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol by the bed. I sprayed all the parts of the bed before bringing it in the house, but somehow missed some. I would spray the wood liberally every night before bed, down in the crevices, as much as I could, and also spray them directly whenever I would see one. They were gone in a matter of days.
Most of us need to watch how much we spend. It’s very tempting to buy essential oils from the companies that sell them for the lowest price. Price alone isn't an indication of quality, but it can be. Knowledgeable vendors that spend countless hours locating quality oils, pay the expensive fees to test their oils (refer to the links available towards the bottom of the page to learn more about essential oil testing) and provide the results to customers and provide free samples upon request should rightfully be charging more for their oils than retailers that stock oils that they've sourced from the cheapest sources.
For example, it is proven that stimulating oils can enhance a person’s concentration over long periods of time, and that sedative formulations can be used to calm and relax individuals who may suffer with bouts of sudden anger. In addition, those with dementia can benefit in other ways from using these types of oils too, as they can reduce agitation and feelings of anxiousness.
The worst deception is when poor companies use synthetic fragrances mixed into vegetable oil and pass it off as true essential oil. This is where the real danger to your health can come: the National Academy of Sciences reported that the 95 percent of synthetic fragrances come from petroleum and have the potential to cause cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.

CITRUS. Similar to sandalwood, this is a group of scents that can be stimulating or sleep-promoting, depending on your individual reaction and the type of citrus oil used. Bergamot, a type of orange, has been shown to relieve anxiety and improve sleep quality. Lemon oil has demonstrated anxiety and depression-relieving effects in research. Citrus may help some people fall asleep more easily, while others may find these fresh, bright scents are relaxing, but not sleep-promoting. If citrus scents are stimulating to you, don’t use them before bed—but do consider using them during the day, to help you feel both refreshed and relaxed.
As a busy mom of 5, I am all about being a good consumer. I want people to be able to get excellent oils, good prices, and to see how wonderful they can be for health and well being. Trust how you feel about the oils- they have an energy and a vibration like all LIVING things. If they feel dead, don’t buy them. If they are waaay overpriced, don’t buy them. Thanks again for such a great unbiased article, that shed the light on some issues those of us outside of mlm companies have been discouraged by.
It would be helpful if in your grid of oils to not use on kids, if there was a risk column for why each of the specific oils poses a problem. I know someone who sells for YL and she uses this stuff on both her children under 2yrs old because she simply doesn’t “believe” it to be harmful. I think that’s the biggest problem with these companies is they treat their culture as a religion and indoctrinate susceptible people who make up their own claims and rules and spread them to each other while the overarching company can sit back and not worry because the company never actually made any claims.
